My husband and I are taking a driving/family reunion trip in Germany (Frankfurt, Munich, etc.). At some point will be picking up our (adult) children in Munich where we will stay for 2 nights. Since we will need 3 rooms I wonder if anyone has a recommendation as we are on a budget.

We just stayed at the Hotelissimo in Munich this past weekend. Considering that we were there for the opening game of the world cup it was reasonable and the price is sure to be a little less now. It was 142 for a double room, plus and additional bed which made it a triple room. I would def reccomend this hotel and it can be booked online. Just google the hotel name.

The 1st Creatif Hotel Elephant looks interesting and very affordable - has anyone stayed there? It can be found at bookings.de.

Hotel Uhland in Munich is right near the Hauptbahnhof.

Our family (five of us) stayed in two rooms at Hotel Uhland and liked it very much. If you still have your car, they have parking---not easy to find in the centr of Munich.

Waht time of year? Is air conditioning a big consideration for you?

Munich can get hot in the summer. So it depends on how well you could deal with it if it happened to be very hot while you are there.

Based on our experience 4 years ago in June/July, I would seriously consider a room AC just in case it is hot. We were miserable for several nights (before we left home, I checked several online weather sites--all agreed high temps would be in the upper 60s for the first 10 days of our trip. WRONG! Try the 90s, and not much cooling at night with the high humidity.)

If it doesn't get hot, you'll have spent a few extra euro a night for heat insurance. If it does get hot, then you'll be very glad you spent the money.

AC is a total waste of money in Munich. There are at max 2 1/2weeks of warmer weather. Today is nice and warm, yesterday was o.k. too.

Yes, in this world, you can pay any amount to insure yourself against any hazard imaginable. It's only a question of money.

The best bang for your buck is to use www.Priceline.com. Just make sure to request rooms in the City Center North or South regions. Anything they give you will probably be very near public transportation since the entire city is well-served by bus, subway and train service.

I've been in Munich several times, and a couple of those were in the Summer. Regardless of how high the temperature was, it was always very humid.

If high humidity doesn't bother you, especially at night when you are trying to sleep, and leaving the windows open simply lets more of that humid air in, then I would opt for an air conditioned hotel.

Sure, you can "get by" without it but why would you? Saving money (and I'm not so sure you'd be saving that much) is always nice but not at the cost of overall comfort.

Toniseid, How much is your budget? I have seen peole on this board say they are on a budget and can't spend more than $300 a night while others are looking for a $75 room. If you are doing a reunion is it important to be in a certain part of town? We like to stay near the main trainstation but if you used to live in Munich and want to be near the old neighborhood that could be all wrong. AisldSeat, you have probably guessed this is the first time I have posted a question, so thanks for the clarifying comment. To me, a budget means less than $150 per room including taxes. I am thinking, with the dollar going south, that I should probably find a room on expedia or any one that charges in dollars, and then I will know what I am paying. The reunion is in a small town closer to Stuttgart and we will be driving there eventually.

If you are in Munich, just to visit Munich by all menas look into the Uhland. An old converted mansion on a quite street about 10 minutes walk from the train station but close to a U-Bahn station. It is very close to the Oktoberfest grounds. Other hotels in your price range will include the Drei Lowen, Deutsches Theater, Elefant, and perhaps the Le Meridian. As I said, look at OctopusTravel.com to start your research. They don't always have the best prices but they do include the full price (with taxes) in dollars. You may want to check the Platzl which is right around the corner from the Hoffbrau Haus (convenient but pricy).

I stayed at the Deutsches Theater hotel two weeks ago and was very happy. It's convenient to the Altstadt and the train station and had the best breakfast of any hotel on my 17 day trip through Germany and Austria. I don't believe they had a/c however.

We stayed at the Marriott in Munich. Got a good deal through priceline.

I was in Munich last week (June 15-19), and it was extremely hot and humid. We stayed at the previously mentioned Hotel Uhland, and we loved the hotel, and the owners were terrific, BUT the lack of air conditioning made it quite uncomfortable at night. Leaving the windows open, you have to hear all the street noise, the insects and birds, and yes, a few of those insects do make their way into your room. We paid a premium for this hotel because it was World Cup time, and we couldn't justify paying even more for a more upscale air-conditioned hotel. BUT, if I were traveling to Munich during fall or spring, I would probably stay at the Uhland again, just because the neigborhood was very nice, the owners were so great, and our room was lovely, and the bed was very, very comfortable.

For those of you who poo-poo air conditioning, you obviously are not from the U.S., where we keep it on maximum all spring, summer and fall (yes, I live in the south, where it's really, really, really hot!).

No, it wasn't it was nice and warm :-) ,35% humidtiy, no bugs yet. Perfect beergarden weather between 25 and 28 celsius max. People enjoyed it! Today is rather cool 20C. There will hopefully still be a few warm days until September, keep fingers crossed :-)

We stayed at the Maritim Hotel about 2 years ago. Wonderful hotel with lovely air-conditioning.

The hotel is located about 2 blocks from the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) and is an easy walk to the main sights of Munich...about 5-10 minutes. Taxis to the Marienplatz are about 5 euro.

I got a double room for around $86. (June) Don't know the prices now, but it's a nice property. Great if you want to daytrip from the train station.
