Munich Hotels
My husband and I will be staying in Munich for 2 nights at the end of July '06. Can anyone recommend a quaint, rustic-type alpine hotel? We will have a car but would prefer to spend the two nights in Munich. I've been looking at the hotels listed on Frommers and many of them in the heart of Munich are more contemporary/modern.
Thank you for your help! Kelly |
>rustic-type alpine hotel?
Only if you can recommend a virginian mansion in downtown New York. ;-) |
oh noooo .... I guess that is my answer :). Ok, so any hotel or B&B or guest house that isn't so contemporary/modern?
|
You should be looking for B&B's rather than "hotels." That will probably have the atmosphere you're after. I'm sure there's something in Munich. Or, you can consider staying in the outskirts and maybe find a little more atmosphere.

sorry Katzen - I'm no help. I didn't see your post before I posted.

Not really rustic-type alpine but very Bavarian... Check out the 3* Drei Lowen close to the main train station. You will have to park in a garage and pay for it. If you wnat to park free stay at the Uhland hotel, an old mansion in a quiet neighborhood near the Oktoberfest grounds that is a charming hotel with the feel of a B&B. The Platzl hotel is a little more expensive but dead in the middle of Munich.
Check OctopusTravel.com for pictures of hotels and their rooms. While you are there walk down the fussganger zone to the Augustiner for a very Bavarian dinner and some very Bavarian bier. If you are interested in a Bavarian evening Schuplatler show they have one at 7 each evening on the third floor of the Hofbrau Haus. |
We stayed at Uhland and had a car but it was our first time in Munich. You don't need a car in Munich and we have never used one since. U bahn and sbahn and trams and buses are very quick and go every where.

The Hotel Uhland is lovely in Munich. It's not "quaint, rustic-type alpine" but is an historic mansion retrofitted into a smallish hotel/B&B. They even have free parking. It's about a ten minute walk to the main train station, a longer 20 minute walk to the Marianplatz. It's in a nice area, tree-lined streets, quiet (unless it's Oktoberfest, because it's across the street from the park where Oktoberfest is held), with nice restaurants close-by. Even free bikes to borrow. The mansion has recently been updated and our room had new furniture, new bath. Very nice breakfast room, nice lobby room with internet access. You can go to their website and e-mail to them directly for the best rates. Very nice people. Lovely hotel, good value. Highly recommend it. Search this site for many other recommendations, too.

AisleSeat, I will definitely check out Drei Lowen. Thank you.
zozozo, we are flying into Frankfurt, driving to Rothenburg then on to Munich. After we leave Munich we are driving to Fussen then on to Swizterland. I would prefer to not have a car in Munich but I'm afraid with our itinerary we will need one. I will also look into Hotel Uhland. I did see this on Frommers but will check it out again. Thanks again for all of your help! |
We stayed at Der Englischer Garden a few years ago, and it is fairly quaint for being in a large city. Remember, the city was severely destroyed in the war, so of course everything is modern now. You'll find more rustic hotels outside the city itself.
|
I haven't stayed there, but I believe the Hotel Platzl is in fact pretty rustic and Bavarian in its decor. It is located smack-dab in the center of the city within easy walking distance to Marienplatz, Maximilianstr. and Viktualienmarkt.

The Platzl looks rustic and it is very rustic inside since the guest rooms are not air conditioned (unless something has changed and they are no longer offering fans). But I'll say this for it..it is about as close to the Marienplatz as you can get.
I also recommend you find a place to park that car in Munich where it is totally unnecessary to have. |
One option for Munich where you definately don't need and probably don't want a car is to drop it when you get to town and pick up another one when you leave. Save a couple of day's car rental, parking and driving hassels.
