Munich Hotel - Stay at the Westin or Sheraton Westpark?

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone familiar with Munich can tell me which of these hotels is better located for tourists? I work for Starwood, and these are the two hotels I can stay at for a substantially discounted rate. Thanks for any input. I am having a hard time figuring out the geography!

Hi mack; If you are coming into Munich bye train, as you exit the station, look right and there is the Westin.

From there, it is probably a ten minute to the old town gate--very easy.

We stayed at the Westin with points.

The Westin IS NOT right next to the main rail station. The LeMeridien IS across the street but that's not one of your possibilities.

What Dukey said is true---I just realized my mistake.

But it is a Starwood, so you could consider the Meriden.

Thanks but the Le Meridien is not an option. It will have to be the Westin or the Sheraton. Thanks

I hope that someone who is more of a Munich maven than I am will turn up to answer but it might depend on what time of year you are going and what kind of tourist activities you are interested in. The Sheraton Westpark looks out of the way until you realize what great transportation connections it has. But if you are going at a time of year when beer gardens are the main draw or are interested in a particular set of museums then the Westin might be better for you. It might also have nifty bus connections. I stayed in a location in Munich where main bus that went to 90 percent of the art museums in Munich stopped in front of the hotel and took me where I wanted to go in 15 minutes. But someone more interested in the scenice museum or the BMW might have had a more complicated journey.

I assume you've read reviews and it is possible that one of the hotel locations is really sub-par for some reason that I don't know about or that one is filled with charm and great neighborhood restaurants. But if buying a transport pass and using public transport to get you everywhere is what you have in mind then it looks to me like the Sheraton Westpark gets the edge.

Hi Mack- As Sandralist stated, the Sheraton Westpark is closer to the center of Munich and has good connections to public transport when compared to the Westin. I stayed at the Sheraton Arabella (which is close to the Westin) many years ago and it was about a 20 minute streetcar ride to the Marienplatz. And sometimes one had to wait 15-20 minutes before the streetcar showed up.

Have a wonderful trip!!!

Both hotels are somewhat in same distance of the city center - and both have subway stops on their doorstep, with trains at least every 10 minutes.
(travelforbeer: Not sure how many years ago you went, but the U4 subway stop Arabellapark has been there since the 1970s. They only recently extended one tram line to get there as well, though.)

The Westin (and neighboring Arabella) is not in a too pittoresque neighborhood. Not with regard to safety, but the "look and feel" is more like a business park with some highrise apartment buildings.

The Sheraton Westpark is also not in a massively scenic setting. But it is still part of the Schwanthalerhöhe/ Westend neighborhoods where you can find many restaurants and pubs in 5-10 minutes walking distance. In case you had enough of the artificial oompah in the beer halls in the city center :-)

Thanks Cowboy- it was about 20 years ago- as I remember we had to walk about 4-5 blocks to catch the tram. And I guess we just didn't know enough to catch the U-bahn...

Thanks Cowboy. I think we will stick with the Sheraton!
