Munich Hotel Recommendation for 2 Nights
We will be spending 2 weeks in Austria and we are flying home from Munich on July 2, 2006. Our friends fly out at 11 a.m. on July 1st (we will drive to Munich from Innsbruck the night before) and my husband and I fly out the next morning. I would like hotel recommendations that are fairly convenient to the airport, but would be nice for our last day in Europe, too. I have read the posts on the World Cup being a factor - hotels fully booked already - but it looks like the games aren't actually in Munich during the time we will be staying there. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Hotel Amba is right across from the main train station & in close proximity to the city center. No, you won't be bothered by the train noise & they provide a great breakfast. www.hotel-amba.de

Check on the www.hotel.de web site. I just did a check for the night of June 30 or July 1, 2006, and there are many hotels available both in Munich and at Munich airport.
This site was first recommended by another Fodorite. Unfortunately, I forget who it was, but I want to give them my thanks. It has become our number 1 site for searching hotel rooms in Germany for the best rates. Example: for a recent trip to Detmold, the best rate we could find anywhere else on the web for the hotel we had in mind was 89 euros per night (for our travel dates). www.hotel.de had rooms at the same hotel available for 60 euros. You're getting (almost) Priceline prices without the Priceline gamble.

I personally like the Astoria in Schwabing, just off on Leopoldstrasse on Nicolaistrasse. It is near the U6 and U2 lines.
From there, the Nordfriedhof Lufthansa bus stop is a short distance away by either taxi or U-Bahn.
The Lufthansa bus is the best way I have found to get to the airport. I have tried the S-Bahn, but in comparison the bus is easier. Your luggage is locked in the baggage compartment under the bus,and there are no scheduled stops until you reach the airport.
The Schwabing area is alive at night with shops, restaurants, ice cream places,etc. Quite a bit of shopping in the area, and it is easy to reach downtown from there.
Just ask for room 301 or 401. They are double rooms with quite a bit of space and the breakfast there is outstanding.
Plenty of food and great variety.

This is going back a few years, but we spent 2 nights at the Gastehaus Englischer Garten in Schwabing. It was very charming and our room was nice and large. It might be worth a look.

I just returned from a stay at the Dorint Sofitel Bayerpost. Very sleek, very stylish rooms in a modern building built and hidden within the historic former post office at Hauptbahnhof (Main Station).
The rooms, while not huge, are definitely adequate (if a bit dark), but very much worthwhile seeing. Service is friendly with apparently genuine smiles. The business center is free of charge, if that's important.
Finally, their wellness area is a must see when staying at the hotel. A small gym, saunas and steam room and a spectacular pool - dark but fun!!!
Should you not care for this radical modern design, there is a Le Meridien Hotel right across the street, that is very nice, too.
The neighbourhood around Hauptbahnhof is not the city's nicest, but I ( being used to a really seedy neighbourhood at the Main Station in Hamburg) would not describe it as such. The city center (beginning of Kaufingerstr. at Stachus) is about a 7 minute stroll away.
Trains for the airport leave at the front door (can't hear any of them) and the alternative Lufthansa Airport Bus does, too.
Should you prefer smaller independent hotels, do take a look at Hotel Ritzi in the neighbourhood of Haidhausen. Indiviually decorated rooms at decent prices. This is on the other side of the city, again, approx. ten minute stroll into the city center.

Thank you for your detailed responses! It sounds like getting to the airport will be easy and we won't need to sacrifice comfort for convenience. I will look in to all of the suggestions. I appreciate the input!
