Munich Hotel
It's a toss up between the Holiday Inn and The Acanthus Hotel for our stay in Munich, which one would be the more centralized to sights?
Also, if our international flight leaves Munich at 1:30pm, what time should we take the train to the airport from our hotel in Munich. Doe the train take a long time to get to the airport. |
Hi Suze1
I took the S-bahn #8 (S8) from the main hauptbahnhof. It took about 40 minutes and was a direct train - no changes. Have fun! |
There are two ways to go from downtown Munich to the airport, to the east or to the west. Either way circles around to the north to the airport. Depending on where you get on the S-bahn, one way will be slightly faster. Either way takes about 40 minutes.
At the airport you can buy an all day, all zones "partner" ticket for 17 EUR. It will be valid for up to 5 people on all transport (S/U-bahn, trams, buses) of the MVV for the entire day. You can use it to get from the airport to the Hauptbahnhof, from there to your hotel, and anywhere else you want to go to in Munich the rest of the day. From the Hauptbahnhof, Acanthus is less than 10 minutes; take the U-bahn or tram to Sendlinger Tor, then it is a short walk on Hauptfeuerwache Strasse. [email protected] |
In answer to your original question, if you are talking about the Holiday Inn City Central, in Hochstrasse, I believe Acanthus would be more centralized to sights. With either hotel you would have a short walk to a U/S-bahn station, then a short trip to, say, Marienplatz, but the walk from Acanthus to Marienplatz would take 11 minutes, shorter than from Holiday Inn. Getting to the Hauptbahnhof end of the pedestrian mall would be much faster from Acanthus. However, Holiday Inn is closer, a short walk, to the Deutsches Museum.
One the other hand, the Holiday Inn would be more convenient to the airport. It would be a five minute walk to Rosenheimer Platz, 3 minutes down the escalators to the station, then 33 minutes via the S-8 to the airport - 41 minutes assuming you timed it right. |
I assume you are from the US. If so, that's an awfully long way to go to stay at a Holiday Inn.
Curious |
Yep, I am from the US and when I was first told about how great the Holiday Inn was I thought the same thing, Holiday Inn in Munich, no way. But then, this person said it was a great hotel, right there by the train, an underground mall, great prices, so that's when I wondered if I should change from my original choice The Acanthus to the Holiday Inn. Sounds as if I can't go wrong with either of those choices reading the replies I received.

I will also be turning a car in so I also wonder which one of these hotels would be more convenient to the returning sight which I'm sure will be at the train station. |
Acanthus is much closer to the main train station. If you turn the car in at the station, it is a short U-bahn or tram trip to Sendlinger Tor and then a few blocks from there. The Acanthus website shows where it is relative to Sendlinger Tor. On the other hand, from Hauptbahnhof you can take the S-bahn four stops to Rosenheimer Platz and it is a short walk from there.
