Munich for a few hours

we'll be in Munich for 4 hours on one day (arriving at Munich airport-MUC at 3pm, leaving from Hauptbanhof at 7pm), and for half a day on a different day. Never been to Munich before.

Any suggestions as to how to best use our time? We'd like to stroll around and see the highlights. Maybe spend one hour or two in a museum (Alte Pinakothek?).

Also, can we check our luggage at the station?

I don't recall about the luggage. Sorry.

I can tell you that too museums in Munich appeal to me. One is the Alte Pinakothek, the other one is the Glyptothek.

The Glyptothek contains a collection of Greek and Roman sculpture in one building and pottery, coins and other artifacts in a building across the street.

The German Museum of Science and Technology is interesting, but I found it to be a strange place to visit. If you are interested in mining and mining engineering, the basement contains more than you want to know.

I think that with a few hours you should definitely take the train to Marienplatz and just stroll around for at least a bit. This is the heart of the city, filled with great restaurants and interesting things to see. From here you can easily visit a beer hall.

Yes, there are left luggage facilities at the Hauptbanhof. Check the overhead signs for an icon of a suitcase over a key and head off in the direction indicated. Rates are based on locker size. In November 2006, I paid 4 euros for a locker large enough for a 24-inch suitcase.

It's a very large station. You might want to choose a landmark near the entrance to the storage room to help you locate the room more easily when you return.

With just a short time I would suggest a visit to Marienplatz with a quick swing through the Hoffbrau Haus. If you take the S-Bahn from the airport to the Hauptbahnhof Marienplatz is one stop short of the train station. Go on to the train station, leve your bags then head back to Marienplatz. If you are hungary the Augustiner in the fussganger zone is great Bavarian food. Also the Andech's Am Dom, right next to the Frauen Kirche is a nice place to get a bite. I understand the walls are lined with wood from old confessionals (if walls could talk).

Thanks a lot everybody. We made a tentative plan. On the first day, we'll definitely take a stroll around Marienplatz. The Hofbrauhaus sounds very good.

On the second day we definitely would love to see the Deutsche Museum - I'm a big science nerd. We'll probably then walk back to the center, and take the S-bahn to the airport from there.

Sounds like a good plan.

One thing I would recommend while you are around the Marienplatz is going to the top of one of the towers at the Frauenkirche. This is the church with the twin onion domes that you always see in pictures of the Munich skyline. The view is great and you only have to climb a few flights of stairs and then take the elevator the rest of the way to the top

I second the recomendation for the Andecher am Dom restaurant. The beer we had there was our 2nd favorite we had in Germany (first place went to a rauchbier in Nuremberg) and the food was very good - terrific schnizel and roasted meats. We also liked the atmosphere very much - comfortable outdoor seating and nice interior as well.

We liked the Hofbrauhaus too just because it was so crazy and kitschy - the place is huge and just goes on and on with all sorts of people and an oompah band. Sort of Oktoberfest year round - LOL. The food there was just ok though and the Hofbrau beer is absolutely drinkable, but not amoung our favorites.

Another choice, esspecially if the weather is nice, would be to head to the Chinese tower beer garden in the English Garden, which isn't far.

Just got back from Munich and weather was cold and snowy, winter hs finally arrived in Bavaria. I agree with your plans to visit the Marienplatz on your first stop. Four hours is plenty of time to browse around the area and have a bite to eat. I suggest eating at either Spatanhaus or the WurstHaus and then stopping in at the Hofbrau Haus for a beer and a little oompa music, save room for a pretzel, they are huge! ALso, the streudel looked fantastic.
End of Feb will most likely be cold, but just remember to dress in layers and you will be fine.

As I said earlier, there are many exhibits of interest in the German Museum. I just was overwhelmed by the mining exhibits in the downstairs (basement) area. It was all in German and the technical vocabulary quickly overwhelmed my general knowledge of German which at best is in need of a dictionary.

I had not realized it until that visit, but toward the end of WW II the Germans had a jet airplane in combat against the US/British air forces. Fortunately for the Allies, the war on the ground was moving swiftly deep into Germany thus taking away the jets habitat, and the jet aircraft often were short on fuel and spare parts. Also, their time aloft was fairly short. Even so, the jets could have turned the tide of battle in the air had the invention hit the skies about 6 months earlier.

That airplane is one of the few war related exhibits that I recall from my visit to the museum.

The time frame of the exhibits in the museum cuts off before the modern era. Those marvels are in another museum in another city. There are therefore very few computer related showcases in this museum.

One of the attractions of downtown Munich is the clock on the Rathaus at 11 am. There are moving figures that put on a neat show. Usually there are quite a few people waiting for the show to begin. (In the summer as I recall, the clock show is also at noon and 17:00.)

As for getting back to the airport, I prefer the Lufthansa bus to the S-Bahn. The bus leaves from the main train station and makes one stop at Nordfriedhof. I have taken both the S-Bahn and the bus, and I now go with the bus every time. The bus company has alternate routes worked out so that if there is a backlog on the autobahn, the bus can still get you there.

Your luggage goes under the bus in a locked compartment and you do not have to worry about your luggage the whole trip.

I like to use the bus particularly when coming into the city because I use a hotel in Schwabing, just off of Leopoldstrsse. If I wish, I can have a taxi meet me at Nordfriedhof and take me to my hotel. By the time I subtract the U-Bahn fare for 2 from the taxi fare, the marginal cost is not all that great. Not having to battle my luggage up and down the escalator is an added bonus.
