Munich: Final advice on Hotel Torbrau (Torbraeu) if you've stayed
 

If you've been before, could you share whether you think it's worth an extra 90 euro to have a Deluxe Dbl room over a standard Double room?

The Deluxe have a sitting area, and possibly
better views, etc. (and baths)

Would really appreciate any feedback, as it was hard to get much info from Reception.
(at ALL)

But I'd really like to make this special for my husband
(and myself) too, due to a *very* tough year. (only have a short stay
and short time to ourselves for leisure...as on the way
to see family in Scandinavia) Have been dealing with a lot
of illness in my family, this year...and challenges.

Would you splurge for the slightly larger room...
if you've been at the Torbrau before? Thanks for any help! :-)

Rates are terrible, in general...with most saying to go elsewhere, when I asked
if they were out of line for this place. But alas, I'm not finding better at similar
places close-in to town. :-( And with our very limited time,
we'd like to be quite close, and yet, not at the train station area,
exactly, either: (not afraid of it...but just would like it to feel
a bit more 'escapist' than train stations generally do)

Standard Dbl is 194 Euro
Deluxe Dble is 280 Euro Yes, painfully expensive. :-{

We've stayed at the Torbraeu before, but not for several years, since the prices went up, and only in the standard rooms. My recollection is that the rooms, while clean and modern, tend to be on the smallish side even by European standards, so if having a sitting area, view, and bath instead of just shower is important to you it may be worth the extra money to get the larger room. We tend not to spend much time in our hotel rooms other than just sleeping, so we never opted to upgrade and I can't comment on how much larger the Deluxe rooms are.

From what you describe, I am guessing we stayed in a deluxe double. Unfortunately it sounds like their rates have gone up significantly. It IS a historic hotel, so yes, the rooms are naturally on the small side. If you are the type of people who need a little room to spread out, and you can handle the extra $$, I would splurge on the larger room. It sounds like you need a little bit of a treat. From what I wrote in my travel journal, we were very happy with the room, bathroom, breakfast, and service. I think you will really enjoy the hotel and its location.

FYI, the well-known Weisses Brauhaus (not as touristy as the Hofbrauhaus) is right down the street. We had a fabulous meal there with excellent service.

We have stayed at the Torbrau twice; one visit was last summer. We stayed in the double room (not deluxe) both times. I didn't miss having a sitting area but we were only in the room to sleep, shower, change clothes...

I think a double would be fine unless you plan to spend a good part of your day in the room.

Sounds like it will be fine then, to remain
in a standard double.

I just wasn't sure if all the glowing reports
here & in books were solely based on the Deluxe
Double (or junior suite) type of rooms. In which case,
just didn't want to arrive there sorely disappointed.

On the other hand, I'm trying to be a realist & prepare myself for that the rooms likely *will* be very simple
and not seem worth the currently high prices. But the *location* seems worth part of the price, at least. :-)

Perhaps the 'charm' of the hotel is more
apparent by way of the deluxe rooms,
but on the other hand, after spending 90 more Euros
for them...perhaps that would be 'blunted' a bit,
as well.

So, might as well keep things
at a slightly more 'reasonable' level, I guess.

trying to share your memories of the Torbrau's rooms
and for tips too re: places to eat, close-by
with some 'atmosphere.' :-)

Any tips on what side to face...or floor/room
preferences? (for perhaps quaint town
views?)

The Front Desk didn't seem to want to
tip their hand. ;-)

Noted in some books they mentioned corner rooms,
being nice...
but found out from the front desk those are
junior suites, when I inquired. Thx again! :-)

I'm afraid I can't help much on room location, but I'll share another close-by restaurant (in addition to Weisses Braehaus, which I'll second) - Zum Dornbraeu, which is down a small alley between the hotel and Weisses, on the same side. It's smaller and a bit cozier, and just about my favorite place to eat when in Munich (although, having said that, memories of the schweinhaxen at Haxnbauer are giving me second thoughts).

If you are on the front side of the hotel I think you can see the Isartor...that puts you on the main street as well, but I don't think it is that busy at night. I think we were on the side. Do a Google image search on the hotel and you will see what I mean.

I think you are making a fine choice with the standard double...use the money you are saving to splurge on some great meals!

Hubby & I are vegetarian...so, will see if they have
anything of that nature on their menus. Occasionally
my DH will do seafood, however. (even I will
about 3x/yr...when travelling only, however)

So, will take a peek! There *is* a German restaurant
in our area, that actually *does* do a vegetarian version
of Schnitzel w/breaded veggies/yams, etc. that is
really good! And all the sides, of course, which
'complete' the meal in a Germanic style they nail,
as well! :)

But I don't expect to necessarily find *that* sort of thing.
'Course we could do Spaetzle, I suppose, as long as there are some nice sides to fill it out. Anyway, appreciate the tips on places to go, with some atmosphere! And will see about requesting a front-facing room, at the hotel to perhaps know a bit more just *what* town we're in! :-)

That's ok, they have great wine too. I am sure you will do fine...there are plenty of vegetarians in Germany, despite the bratwurst-and-ham-hock-eating stereotype!

(I lived in Stuttgart for 2.5 years as an extremely happy hausfrau, hence the name. Still am a hausfrau, but back in the States now.)

Just a block or two from the Torbrau, there is a small food market with various stalls/tents. I bet you can pick up some yummy vegetarian-friendly items there.
