Munich - day trip to Ingolstadt/Audi
I would like to know if it's possible to visit the Audi factory in Ingolstadt as a day trip from Munich. I was thinking of travelling by train and buying a Bayern ticket, but I'm not sure how far the factory is from the train station in Ingolstadt and if there is any public transport available to the factory. How long should it take to travel from Munich to the factory?
Any advice on how to reach Audi's factory from Munich will be appreaciated. Thanks. |
It is absolutely possible.
Ingolstadt is only about 45 minutes by train from Munich. The Audi plant, museum, everything is about 5 km north of the Hauptbahnhof. It is open daily from 09:00 to about 18:00, I believe. You can take a bus - ask at the train station, or just a taxi. We were driving so I can't provide public transport details. Google "Audi Forum Ingolstadt" and you will get lots of useful results in English. The email address is [email protected] |

Thank you, LSky and Aramis.
I had an email address ([email protected]) and I've written to them and never did a response. I will email [email protected]. Aramis, how did you like Audi Forum Ingolstadt? I know tours are 2 hours and I wondering how long to budget (timewise) at the museum/shop after the tour. |
As an old Audi worker (LOL), I can tell you that you have to take the train to Ingolstadt Nord. From there there's a public bus to the factory. Not too long ago, they were selling beer to the assembly line workers in the shops inside the factory. The Audi forum is just a showoff room.

I would allocate 1.5 - 2 hours to the museum and and the factory tour (if I recall correctly) takes about another 1.5 hours, so overall you may want to spend about half a day there. It is good fun and especially the tour of the production is quite interesting. I am not sure whether they do English tours, though - in any case you have to sign up for the production tour in advance. You can call them at +49- 800 - 2 83 44 44.
The train and bus as described above is easy. There is further information on the Audi US website: http://www.audiusa.com/us/brand/en/e...ngolstadt.html |
I found the museum mobile quite interesting, although I don't consider myself a car freak at all. I did not do the factory tour, though.
Besides, there is a bit more than just Audi in Ingolstadt that's worth seeing. The baroque old town is quite charming, then there is the castle and some interesting churches, and there is quite a bit left of the old town's fortifications, the medieval town wall, the renaissance and the 19th century fortress. |
The museum is excellent, and I would certainly allocate at least 2 hours there if you are a car buff. You may also want to pop into the Kundenzentrum next door where lucky folk get to take delivery of their new Audis.

"The Audi forum is just a showoff room."
Is it a nice "showoff room"? Say, on par with BMW World? |
It is a very nice showroom (in fact it is a decent size museum) - and they have enough interesting history to show (off).
Even better is the factory tour, though. |
Yes, it's at par with BMW world. I can't say many negative things about the company. I'm not buying their products anymore and I'm not working there anymore. The cars are too expensive for what they're offering. The cafeteria was decent.

I was impressed with the BMW world. The Mercedes Benz Museum topped it though.
