MUNICH DAY TRIP
 

I have three days in Munich soon in Sept. We have one day in guided tour of Neuschwanstein. Another day in Munich proper. Wandering about a day trip within a short train ride from Munich to some Alps village etc. We will only be able to travel by train. Is there some interesting village besides Mittenwald/Oberammergau? Is this doable? Thanks in advance!

One of the best things we did was to do a third reich tour in Munich. I forget who it was but the guy was from the UK originally. Interesting, we all talk about how much we leaned from that private tour. See if you can do a search for private tours. We had a great time at beer gartens and in Austria.

Is there a reason why you're not considering Mittenwald or Oberammergau? Or have you already been?

I just made it to Oberammergau and was really impressed. It's just an amazing little place.

But ok, so how about Prien am Chiemsee? I haven't been there yet myself, but it's next on my gotta-get-there list!

We did "The Third Reich" tour also, very interesting. We also took the subway out to Auschwitz, if you are interested in history.

Mittenwald and Garmisch can be done in one day, heading to Mittenwald first and then stopping in Garmisch on the way back to Munich. Delightful!

Salzburg is a great place to visit for a day or longer. It is included on the Bayern Ticket (27 Euros for up to five people traveling after 9am). As I recall it takes about 1 1/2 hrs on the train to get there.

Actually I forgot to mention that Munich is a great city with lots and lots to offer from brewery tours to world class art gallaries. You could easily spend another day there.

All of the above (incl. the advice to add another day in Munich), plus

Murnau or Bad Tölz (small towns), or
Schliersee (village, plus hike around lake), or
Tegernsee (village, lake cruise), or
Bayrischzell (village, plus some mountain hiking).
Each place has an hourly direct train connection to Munich, and it takes 45-60min to get there, respectively.

The tourist informations' websites can be looked up using the syntax nameoftown.de as URL. Bad Tölz "translates" to badtoelz.de for this purpose.

Wow, when did they build this subway from Munich to Auschwitz? Must be a long ride...

I´m sure you mean Dachau, and it is the S-Bahn. Subway = U-Bahn, U for Untergrund = underground.

We are planing to visit Munich next year. Why go out of the city all 3 days. Isn't there something to see IN the city?

Sure there in...but the small villages are postcard gorgeous.

A Bayern ticket is a Bavarian day pass on all (or most) transportation in Bavaria. It is 28 euro and is good for up to 5 people. It will take you to Salzburg. There is a DB ticket window at the bus station (adjacent to the main train station) in Salzburg to buy one for your return. If you buy the ticket from the agent and not a machine it is 30 euro. You must use regional trains and cannot travel before 9 a.m. It is a great deal. No need to book ahead. Enjoy! CJ

We just came back from the area and highly recommend Prien . We spent 3 wonderful days there. I will write a mini trip report later.
