Munich/Dachau
We will be in Munich mid April and would like a day trip to Dauchau. Memorial Tours not available until May. Thought of renting a car or train. Help.
|
Check any tour book and they will give you the exact details but the S-bahn goes to Dachau. It will require a walk to the Camp but it's not that far.
|
Public transpo to/from is pretty easy - take the S2 train to Dachau station, then hop on a bus to the memorial site.
I think you can potentially also walk from the station (should be like 15-20 minutes). |
I did it in 2001 and took the train. Its an easy trip. Short walk from train station to camp. Veyr worth it.

When you get off the S-Bahn in Dachau, the bus is right there waiting to take you. No problem at all. I imagine that most of the people on your train will also be going to the camp.
Dachau camp is NOT to be missed. I strongly suggest you do some research on Dachau before you go. It will make the experience even more memorable. While on the bus in Dachau, pay attention to the traffic lights. The lights have two colors, red and yellow. If neither light is showing, it is GO!!!! Works there, but probably wouldn't work in the United States due to the very poor driving habits we have. The Germans KNOW how to drive! Curious |
Yes, an easy day trip using public transportation. If you have the Rick Steve's guide book, he lays it out perfectly.
Here are some photos from Dachau: http://www.jimtardio.com/germany-dachau.html |
It is a very short and easy drive. I would rent a car and spend the morning in Dachau and then drive the countryside the remainder of the day exploring other towns.

Agree with steve.
The drive is very simple from the heart of Munich. It is a moving experience and should not be missed. The thing about going to the town as steve mentioned is worth doing; as you close your eyes, try to imagine, as hard as that may be, that there was town going about their business while the horrors of the Nazis was occuring right there! I'm Jewish but my husband is not and he was so so moved by the experience( but yes I was too). Walk the entire grounds after you leave the museum part. |
