J - The area around the Hauptbahnoff isn't bad. I was there this past March and I stayed at Kings Center just a few blocks from there and even walked back by myself a few times. I, too, had read that the area was seedy and I found no problems whatsoever. Really, I only saw one adult themed shop on my walk around the neighborhood near the Hauptbahnoff(but then again, I wasn't looking) and it was off on a side street, easily avoided.

Personally, I recommend the Kings Center, but I was on a tight budget. I found that it was money well spent in staying at that hotel. It's a good location within walking distance to just about anything. Good luck with your planning and have lots of fun. As always, I recommend a stop for lunch at Dallmayr's and a beer at Augustiner's = yum!

We try to stay in that area because it is close to the fussganger zone that starts at Karlstor on that side. We have stayed at the Uhland and it is nice and just far enough away to be out of the "train station" neighborhood.

Our other favorite is the Drei Lowen or the Drei Lowen Residence which is right in the middle of the area we are talking about. There are a few adult clubs and shops in the eighborhood but other than that is is just another neighborhood. As with any big city be careful of your activities and don't do stupid stuff.

Thanks for all the info guys.

We had definitely heard great things about the Hotel Uhland, but they are already booked up for the time we will be there. Too bad.

I found another place a little bit further out near Schloss Nymphenberg - Hotel Laimer. The price was nice and it has gotten some glowing reviews on Trip Advisor, so we went for it. It is fairly close to an S-Bahn line, so we will be able to easily get around the city.

The S-Bahn and U-Bahn make Munich very easy to navigate. When is your trip?

>Hotel Laimer
You can take Bus 51, 151 (Aidenbachstr.) to Laim Station, walking will take too long. The area is nice and quiet! There are a few shops at Romanplatz,( better you'd go to Laimer Platz (more choice)) or downtown.

The tram from Romanplatz to downtown is almost a fast as the train and the Hirschgarten is within walking distance.
Good choice!

J, I have just returned from Munich. I was there solo, stayed about 3 or 4 blocks from the Station, at Hotel Montee, on Dachaustrasse, and felt very safe. It was a moderately priced and very convenient hotel, close to the tram and a block from the U-Bahn station. The rooms were quite small, but clean, had a good breakfast, and a very nice staff, very helpful. I recommend the hotel and the area.

If you're lookig for "unsafe" areas, try getting a room at Neuperlach or Hasnbergl suburbs. It will take a while and you need to know where and when to be there to get into trouble. It's a lot of work, but if you really try, you might succeed ;-) If you're looking for a real fight, I know some people do! certain rural towns between Munich and Augsburg are are the best places. ;-) Country folks and police are far away...
