What are best tings to see first time in Munich area and south to Salzburg?

Munich<BR><BR>1. Marienplatz...center of the old town. Watch the glockenspiel<BR><BR>2. St Peters Church...climb the tower and see the Alps<BR><BR>3. Two Sisters Church<BR><BR>4. Assam church on Sendlinger Strasse....Baroque to the max!<BR><BR>5. The Residenz...be sure and visit the treasury and see St. George and the Dragon in jewels.<BR><BR>6. Englisher Gartens...stroll, ride your bike, have a beer at the Pagoda or the See Haus.<BR><BR>7. Augistenerbrau beer gartens...near the train station. go there to drink beer with the Germans and avoid the tourists at the Hofbrauhaus which is still OK<BR><BR>8. Visit the Nue Pentathoteke (sp)...modern art museum aand the Ald Pent..... the old religious paintings<BR><BR>9. Visit the victualenmarkt for a brat and a beer<BR><BR>10. Visit the summer palace of the Weitlesbachs...in Munich. but I forget the name<BR><BR>11. Visit Dachau... but be prepared<BR><BR>US

Also visit Herrenchiemsee, Ludwig II palace modeled after Versailles.

Call me crazy, but I love the Hofbrau Haus. I was there with some colleagues from Belgium and we were almost thrown out. You thought the Americans were rowdy - we've got nothing on the Belgians.

The winner, hands down, in my book is the Museum of Science and Instry, the German Museum. It is arguably the best museum of its kind in the world.<BR>For a slice of history, the Residenz of the Wittelsbach dynasty in the city itself is beautifully restored after it was severely damaged in WW II.<BR>

I also enjoyed Neuschwanstein & Linderhof, also done by Luwig II. <BR><BR>In Munich itself, there are walking tours that will show you "Hitler's Munich," which is a great way to peek into the historical spots of events you only read about in school.<BR><BR>If you do not drink beer, Pfalzer Weinstube is a civilized and yummy place to go.

Andechs monastery and brewery. Nymphenburg Palace and park. Zugspitze (www.zugspitze.de). Berchtesgaden and K&ouml;nigsee.

Avoid the long climb up to Andechs. The interior is being restored this summer. However, the beer garden and restaurant are open.

I agree with all those who have already posted. One of our favorite restaurants was the Spaten House. (Close to the opera house) There is also a wine stube close by that is great. We were there in December and it was wonderful. We enjoyed a day trip to the alps and visited the village of Mittenwald. It's a must as far as we are concerned. It was like a postcard. Now you have me longing for another trip to Germany. Enjoy!

Go to Berchtesgaden and the Konigsee. A daytrip from Munich and well worth it. Also spend a day in the Deutschesmuseum. And, of course, take every opportunity to sample the local delicacy: beer.
