Munich & Garmisch

We are spending 2 days in Munich and 3 days in Garmisch. We're wondering which sights to see when we're in each city. We will have a rental car and want to drive into Austria and possibly do a Sound of Music tour. Should we do that from Garmisch? We also want to see Neuschwanstein Castle and Dachau. Should we do that from Munich?

Also, what about Mike's Bike's in Munich? We're interested in doing that tour. I'm 30, my husband is 33 and my sister-in-law is 23 and we're traveling together. I am worried that the tour will be full of only college kids. Does anybody know the age bracket of this tour?

This December I stayed in Munich and was able to take spend the day skiing in Garmisch. I think it was less than an hour train trip. I've gone to Salzburg from Munich it takes just under two hours.
Dachau is a short trip out of the city and should not be missed.

We did Mike's Bike's in Munich back in 2002. It was great and the guide was very informative on the history and architecture of the city. The tour included lunch at the Englisher Garten-a great Biergarten. We are in our fifties and at the time found the tour to include a mix of people of all ages.
Don't miss the Viktualienmarkt and the Residenz. Dachau is easy to do from Munich.

Can I ask where you are staying in Garmisch?

We're staying at a hotel called Schell in Garmisch. I'm a little scared because I can't find many reviews for it. However, my other choice of Partenkirchner Hof sold out on our days while we contemplated. Our other choice as part of our package was Koenigshof, which is just a Quality Inn. I didn't want that. Do you know anything about Schell? I know it's a smaller family-run place but that's about it.

It's only about an hour's drive, maybe less, from Garmisch to Fussen/Neuschwanstein area so it makes much more sense to visit from Garmisch as opposed to Munich. It's about 2 hours from Garmisch to Salzburg. Dachau can be reached via metro from Munich. Check out www.viamichelin.com for routes and mileages.

Best wishes,
Tracy

You may want to check Gasthaus Fraundorfer for a room. We just booked there for a night in May. It is a very popular place to stay with people from the Cincinnati area.
