Munich and day trips by rail
We will be in Munich in early November. What highlights do you recommened for Munich? Also we are staying close to the rail station so day trips will be feasible.
|
Daytrips:
Dachau King Ludwig's castles: Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau Salzburg Innsbruck |
In Munich itself: the great science & technology museum on an island in the river; the Residenz; the Marienplats (good place to eat is Peterhof); three fine art museums; the Victualenmarkt; and the zoo. If you have time, go out to Schloss Nymphemberg and the English Garden.

For about 15 euros you can buy a Bavarian rail pass and take a regional train anywhere in Bavaria in a day. The choices are almost endless. A trip to Landshut and/or Altotting would be a good choice for a day trip, and not as heavily touristed as other popular sights. A short train ride and a pleasant hike will take you to Andechs Monastery, a must for any one in search of the holy stein of beer. Munich is a great city - you'll love it. Dress warm.

Thanks for your replies.
Bird is there a website for the Bavarian rail pass. Where it goes? etc? We love the little towns in Germany. |
The Bavaria day pass (or Bayern pass) is part of the German Rail offer.
I don't read German, but from my understanding, it is € 15 for a ticket for 1 person, but only € 22 for a group of 2-5 traveling together. It is only valid on 2nd class of regional trains, NOT valid on IC, ICE, EC trains. And it is not valid until 9am of day of travel. Here's the website: http://www.bahn.de/d_regional/view/b...rnticket.shtml |
Another destination possibility is Oberammergau which is within easy public transport (bus) reach of both Linderhof and Neuschwanstein.
Also, for the largest of all the Ludwig palaces a day trip to Prien and the short ferry ride across the lake to Herrenchimesee which has an interior mimicking Versailles to include a scaled down hall of mirrors. |
Other day trip possibilities are Nuremberg and Augsburg.
|
And Salzburg (in Austria).

In Munich itself I always recommend Mikes bike tours
www.mikesbiketours.com a quick look at the website indicates that early November is about the end of thier season. Perhaps if it's unseasonably nice you might check them out. |

Another vote for Salzburg--Mozart's birthplace, art galleries, Sound of Music sites (on a self-guided tour to save money!)
It's a charming town with very friendly residents. |
