Munich and Austria

My wife and I are planning our first trip to Europe, we would fly in and out of Munich. We also want to visit Austria, we want to see the church that the Sound of Music wedding took place. We are struggling deciding if we should take a guided bus tour or venture out on our own? Also suggestions for a 7 day visit.

Thank you for your help,

Jerry

I think most of the people on this board are independent travelers, so I think most of us will tell you that it's not difficult to do your own planning.

My first suggestion would be to get a guidebook or two. Familiarize yourself with the areas in which you want to travel--hotels, transportation, tours, etc..

You can do a "Sound of Music" tour out of Salzburg. As I recall, it takes about a half day because it visits other sites related to the movie in addition to the church.

You can do everything you need to do on the internet.

one example of a tour, not sure what time it starts. You take the train from Munich to Salzburg.

Take the train from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen one day. 1.5 hours. Many things to see and do there. If you overnight there you can take the train to visit Mittenwald and then to Innsbruck for a visit also.

North of Munich is Nuremberg and I love going there. Beautiful walled city. The train takes you right to the city wall.

Do you actually want to go to Munich? If you want to see Austria as well you could fly into Munich and out of Vienna, although you do not have much time. The Lake District around Salzburg is also worth seeing, look up Hallstatt.

You can break your stay with two days in Salzburg. The 1,5 hr train journey from Munich leaves you ample time for Salzburg on the first day. For the second day you can go to Mondsee by an hourly bus, and explore it at your own pace, and probably have the afternoon for the corners of Salzburg you missed the first day. (The Tourism information in Salzburg will have the bus schedule.)
