My mom and I will be spending 3 nights in (or near) Munich, Germany from August 13-16 this year. We are hoping to stay in a B&B type of place. Are there any recommendations for accommodations in or near Munich (somewhere that would offer easy transportation to the city each day)?
Are there recommendations for how we spend our time in the Munich area? We enjoy music, theater, art, history, food (and beer), people, science, and nature. What are the must-see attractions, and what are some best-hidden treasures?

Get a guidebook of Munich. The Marienplatz is a good place to start with. There are plenty of beer halls to go do nearby. I would suggest the Hofbrauhaus. It was originally the King's private beer. In all the floors, the HB holds about 4,000 people. Unless you want a meal, stay on the bottom floor, have a beer and listen to the Oompah band. Your mom will better understand this, but Hitler got his political start rousing crowds at the HB. When you're there, you can get an idea of how he could do such a thing.

A great place to go and enjoy is the Englischer Garten. Try not to get lost. Make sure you have a map. There are a few restaurants there, and many people out enjoying the sun. There will be occasional sex going on, but it's part of the scene.

Last time we were in Munich the Hofbrau Haus had a Bavarian folk evening every night at 7 on the third floor. You can go to the show and add a buffet if you like. We skip the buffet because there are so many other places we like to eat nearby. Have a beer and watch slap dancing, the woodchoppers dance, cowbell music, alphorn playing, the chicken dance and more. Get your hotel to call ahead for reservations because it can fill up with tour busses.

On the nearby restaurant scene for dinner we like the Augustiner Brewery a few block toward the train station from Marienplatz, The Andecheser (sp) am Dom, right behind the Frauen Kirche and even the Ratskeller in the basement under the Rathaus (glockenspiel), For lunch we like to pick up something from one of the many places around the Viktualien Markt (a block from Marienplatz).

A few blocks away from Marienplatz the Deutsches Museum on an island in the Isar is a great hands-on science museum is worth whatever time you are able to give it. Plan at least a morning or an afternoon there.

There are three impressive art museums organized by historical period. The Nymphenburg Place (especially the coach house full of Cinderell coaches) is worth a look. You can ride the S Bahn to Dachau then transfer to a bus to go to the very sobering concetration camp. If you are a BMW fan there is the BMW museum and the BMW factory tour.

Obvious day trips are to Neuschwanstein, Garmish and the Zugspitze, Salzburg, Rothenburg and many others.
