Munich
 

I will be in Munich for two nights in December, catching a 0950 flight out on a Monday morning. Will I be alright, time and distance, staying in the Atlstadt area and either taking the train or a cab to the airport? I hate to stay one night in Munich and one night at the airport. What are the suggestions of the pros?

It takes 45 minutes to make the trip by train, which is likely to be faster than by cab (no danger of a traffic delay).

In any case, I think you would have to leave for the airport around 07.00 or earlier, and this does coincide with heavy traffic around the city. If you leave at 06.00, you would probably be ok with a taxi, but it would probably cost around 50 E even without traffic delays.

My last time in Munich, I used the Lufthansa Airport bus. Simple, easy, and leaves from the Central Train Station.

Take the train. The S1 and S8 both go to the airport. Trains depart every 10min.

Agree with taking the train. It's fast, easy, and clean. Give yourself plenty of time at the airport, it's pretty huge.

Thank you for the great information. I will plan to stay in Munich both nights and head to the airport via public transportation.

Consider the Meridian Hotel. This hotel is just a bit outside of the train station from the airport. Was an easy walk for us to the old city center.

When we took S train to the airport at Marienplatz ( last Sept.) , we had to wait about 25 minutes.... .

Here's an article which pretty much gives you all the information you will need. Look up your airline and see which of the two terminals your flight will leave from. The S-Train makes two stops. Be sure to get off at the correct terminal.

The S-train (the local train) runs about every 20 minutes. Peak traffic hours, it runs every 10 minutes.

Signs for the S-train are usually in green (although I can't remember specifically for Munich how it looked)

You should give yourself at least a couple of hours from your hotel to your departure gate, thus leaving some spare time for any untoward incidents.

swandav's suggestion that you leave at 7am or earlier is a good one.

I agree that taking either the S-1 or S-8 will work but also be aware that while a LOT more expensive and depending on the time you leave a cab can easily get you to the airport faster. I've done it both ways, most recently in a cab which at one point was traveling over 160 KPH on a superhighway...an interesting trip to say the least.

We've taken the S-Bahn to the airport multiple times without any issues. It is very easy. As long as you stay near an S-Bahn station served by the airport, it will be very convinient. You don't need to stay near the main train station.

LOL, if you believe that's interesting, I should drive you to the airport. Try the A92 at night for speed.

The S-Bahn is frequently delayed, but since most of the time there's one every 20 min on each line, it's not a big issue. :-)

There are hotels of all classes around the Train station. That is a pretty easy walk in the pedestrian zone to Marienplatz and the Christmas Market. Also near Marienplatz you will find the Viktualien Market and the Hofbrau Haus. For some great Bavarian food I like the Augustiner restaurants. There are several of them.
