Munch Advise on where to buy Backpacks & Waterproof Pants

Please can someone advise where to buy backpacks and waterproof pants or pants which dry out easily in case of rains. Are these pants called by a special name? Which sportshop do we visit? We will be staying close to the Hauptbahnhof. Any recommendations are welcome.

Kind regards,

Karstadt Sport department store at Karlsplatz (Stachus). Right next to Karl's Gate.
It's a 5 minute walk towards city center/Marienplatz from Hauptbahnhof.
Waterproof is a common label for sports apparel, so any shop assistant should understand that. If not, which I doubt, the German translation would be wasserdicht - or "Goretex" ;-)

If you don't find what you're looking for at that store, you have two more larger sports department stores at Marienplatz, Sport Scheck and Sport Schuster. If you walk to Marienplatz, those are both on Sendlinger Str, few meters from Marienplatz.

There's one place you have to go, just like everybody else that plans "an expedition". It's well known and famous. Look here first, they are the ONLY place whith decent quality and not too expensive expedition equipment in town. Only if you can't get it there, have a look at the other places. Karstadt Sporthaus would be the last place to go, they are a rip off!

http://www.daerr.de/

DÄRR Expeditionsservice GmbH‎
Theresienstr. 66
80333 München
089 282033

The other shops sell expesive trash, if you have enough time compare their quality and price to Daerr. If they don't stock it right away, you can pre-order from their catalogue and pick it up later.

On the Daerr website, you can also order the catalogue to be sent to your home anywhere in the world for 20€ in 1-2 weeks. Of course in Munich it is free. Or you pre-order via internet.

The cheap Karstadt trash really annoys me. Pants that aren't waterproof like they claim and backpacks that last for less than one trip!! Really.

Bunch of nonsense.
You get same brands here and there. Doesn't matter if you buy it from Karstadt or Därr..

Cowboy, you need to do more travelling/camping to places where you depend on good quality equipment, and you'll notice what I mean. Karstadt only sells the lowest quality available. Fact, not nonsense.
You don't get the same "brands", it's a huge! difference.
Ever went camping to Scotland in September. ;-)
The folks that work at Daerr are all Globetrotters themselves. Those at Karstdt usually lack basic knowledge about the things they sell.
Go to both places yourself on the same day ask questions and compare, you'll notice the difference too.

Dear Fodorites,

Thanks for the very valuable info. Much appreciate it. Is there any particular brands that we should look out for especially for waterproof backpacks and waterproof pants.

Kind regards,

A good folding windproof umbrella will be your best friend. The last time we were in Salzburg it rained every day for a solid week. Apply some waterproofing spray to your shoes before you go and you will be fine. The equipment you are thinking of buying will be fairly expensive and you will have to ship it home at the end of your trip.
