Multiplug, Surge Protector needed?
We are driving Italy, Croatia and Slovenia for 3 weeks in September, followed by a 2-week Adriatic-Mediterranean cruise. In the past we've got by with a simple electrical "converter" plug for recharging our New Zealand phones and camera from European power points.
People tell me that today's traveller has so many more gadgets to recharge (in addition to the foregoing we'll have an iPad and an android tablet this time) they need to take along a 4-point multiplug or "power board" in order to recharge several gadgets simultaneously. I wonder how necessary this really is - any opinions? Ordinarily I'd take along my in-car charger for recharging our phones while driving, but now that connection (the cigarette-lighter) will be taken up by yet another gadget - our GPS!
I like to pack light. While shopping for a light, slimline multiplug I came across a surge protector/multiplug with 2 power point plugs plus a USB plug for tablets, iPads etc. It's rather more expensive than a straight power-board multiplug, but it got me thinking - how important is it to have that surge protection capacity for the more precious items like tablets, in countries like Croatia, Slovenia etc? Any thoughts, anyone?

I travel with Mrs B who is a lawyer and she regularly needs to do work while we are on holiday. I need to share-trade and use GPS.
We take two mobile phones, a laptop, a small kindle, a camera and a kettle.
The camera only needs charging every 6 months or so
The kindle every 3 weeks or so
One mobile phone needs a charge every 2 weeks
One mobile phone also provides all GPS requirements and we charge in the car all the time
One laptop needs charging maybe every 3 days.
The kettle is a kettle.
This requires one socket converter. (full stop)
Surge protection in Italy (well maybe in the utter boondocks) but for 99% of hotel rooms no.

I suspect this was topped by an advertiser, but I will take the opportunity to say, we like having a few cheap adapters on hand. They don't take up any space in luggage, and it's handy to be able to, say, charge up one's phone in the morning while also using a hair straightening iron.
