Multi City Trip Is it Too Much

We are planning a trip for next September and plan to visit 4 cities. Fly to Brussels, train it to Amsterdam, fly to Prague and train to Vienna. Fly home from Vienna. Our main goal is art and historical city sites. We will have 10 days and are experienced travelers in Europe. Do you think we are trying to do too much as we have never visited any of these cities? If we were to drop a city or spend less time which would you recommend? Thanks for the advice.

You could spend just one day in Brussels - enough for mosts as many find the city disappointing. Three days in each Amsterdam, Prague and Vienna seem fine to me.

Thanks for the quick reply. For some reason my husband seems to think that Brussels really has alot to see. I personally think Prague and Vienna seem much more appealing.

I would do just Prague and Vienna in 10 days, but you know yorselves better than I do.

Brussels has quite a few good museums, the Grand Place, good restaurants, beer and chocolate...

but I think Amsterdam, Prague, Vienna are more than enough for 10 days - don't forget the 'down time' from transferring between cities, checking in /out of hotels, etc.

Have you factored in travel time? When you start adding up things like cabs/train to the airport, waiting in the terminal, train rides, etc, that doesn't leave you much time in each city. This is the kind of trip that can be thrown way off schedule if you have just one late plane flight. If you are experience Europe travelers you must go fairly regularly, so why not pick Vienna/Prague or Brussels/Amsterdam, and add another nearby city to either tri, then see the other cities next time?

does your 10 days include travel to/from Europe? If so you really have less than 8 days free. 4 cities in 8 days (or even 10 full days) is waaaay to much IMHO.

1 day travel to Brussels, 1 day for jet lag recovery and light sightseeing, 1 day to fly home from Vienna - then subtract 1/2 a day for every time you switch cities - and you can see a big chunk of your time will be eaten up before you see any of those fascinating cities.

I'd cut back to 2 cities - or 3 at the very most.

That should be ". . . waaay too much . . . ."

What about Berlin, Prague and Vienna? These 3 cities are better connected than trying to get from Amsterdam and Brussels to Prague.

You could even stop for the day in Dresden between Berlin and Prague. Lots to see there in the way of art and historical city sites.

Fly into Berlin, spend 3 nights, early train to Dresden, visit the city and then take the late train out to Prague, 3 nights, train to Vienna, 3 nights and fly home.

Too much in too little time. Either do Prague and Vienna or do Amsterdam/Brussels with side trips to Brugge, Ghent etc. Otherwise 3 of your 10 days are wasted traveling.

I also recommend dropping Brussels. Get out ASAP or fly straight to Amsterdam.

From Prague to Vienna consider the overnight train. You'll save a day of travel and a night in a hotel.

Beware of all panhandlers in the Prague train station. Beware of all pickpockets in the Amsterdam train station.

Could it be that your husband is thinking of Bruges? I haven't been there yet but it seems to have a bit more than Brussels.

travel_princess Dec 18th, 2006 05:53 PM

Thanks for all the replies. We will have 10 days not including our travel days. We are using frequent flyer miles so it was much easier to get into Brussels than Amsterdam. So perhaps we will only spend our arrival day in Brussels and then go onto Amsterdam. Maybe save Prague for another trip when we do Germany.

Prague,Vienna and Budapest is the conventional combination. Very easilly tied together.
I think 3 nights in each is comfortable.
