MUC to Innsbruck
I will be arriving at MUC a little after noon on May 6th. What is the best way to get to Innsbruck that day. Rental car or train or bus??? Thanks for your suggestions.

Is this a one way car rental? If it is, dropoff in a second country will probably be expensive.
That is also a long distance to drive if you will be affected by jetlag.
It is a lovely drive, but it is also a lovely train ride. You can go via Mittenwald or via Rosenheim. One time it rained most of the way and we were glad that we were on the train and not driving.

If it is a one-way trip and you want to just get there I think rail would be your best option. If you are unfortunately wedded to your automobile and cannot stand the thought of not being behind the wheel then rent a car.
The scenery between the two isn't any better, or worse when driving IMO...but at least on the train you can sit back, relax, and enjoy it without doing any work.

Thanks for the thoughts on the MUC to Innsbruck trip. Since I understand there is no real need for a car in Innsbruck and I am only going to be there for a few days before returning to MUC the train seems the best option. Have a great Spring!

<<no real need for a car in Innsbruck>>
I guess if you are "confined" to Innsbruck (i.e., at a conference for example), then this is probably true, But a car in Innsbruck could be a great asset for destinations near and not-so-near (i.e., within 90 minutes).
Best wishes,
Rex

I would say car for the same reason as the others, and with the same caveats. Rental cars in Austria are fierce in price, and some agencies sock it to you on a second driver.
From Strauss airport, the trip to Munich city center is about 45 minutes to an hour. You can do it by an airport bus operated by Lufthansa, or S-bahn - a subway type train.
Then you have to find the car rental agency, and then you have the joy of finding your way out of Munich.
I think the suggestion made above that you might need or want the car to visit places near Innsbruck is a good one.
I also suggest acquiring a map of Innsbruck. Even with a street map I got turned the wrong way a couple of times. One Map Place in Dallas can get one for you. (Source of my map.)
I found that a day in Innsbruck was sufficient to see the primary tourist attractions. After that, there is a lot to see up in the hills.
I think you would enjoy a drive to the Ötztal, south and west of Innsbruck.
A turn onto the Gletscherstrasse near Sölden leads to some nice icy scenery.
Have a good trip.

I do not understand prior posting regarding a car rental. There is no need to go into Munich to rent a car. Many car rental agencies have offices directly in the airport. It is a very easy task to put your bags in a cart, walk to the rental counter, get your key and walk to the nearby parking area for the car. It is an easy 2 hour drive to Innsbruck , completely on the autobahn. No need to find your way out of Munich, as the airport connects directly to the autobahn and the journey to Innsbruck is clearly marked. I agree that a car would be very useful in Innsbruck to explore the surrounding areas.
There is much to see.Review a guide book and decide what is most interesting to you.
In most cases, it is cheaper to reserve the car before arrival.
The car also offers an easy way to return to the airport. You could take another way( rather than the autobahn) back to Munich to see the german countryside.
If several people are traveling with you, a car is often much cheaper than several train tickets.Re message of Bob Brown- if you rent the car in Germany, you pay German rate and not the " fierce in price- austrian"

I would disagree that a day in Innsbruck is enough, this is just not correct. Also the tram and bus services in town and around the hills to nearby villages are very efficient and the Post buses leave regularly to outer villages such as Gotzens and Hall in Tirol, which are quite beautiful and have much to offer.
In Innsbruck itself you have the old town, the palace, the Alpen zoo, Scloss Ambras castle, Tyrolean folk museum and a short ride on the tram to alpine villages such as Natters, Mutters, Igls and Fulpnes.
Unless you plan to stop off between Munich and Innsbruck I would take the train, it is a pleasant enough trip but I did not find the German countryside that inspiring, preferring Austria and Switzerland by far.

I am not sure what Mr. Brown was trying to say either about rental cars, and I wrote it. Too sleepy I guess; it does sound a little fuzz brained.
I think I must have been trying to answer a question stuck in my mind from a previous post.
I have rented cars in Munich, Salzburg, and Innsbruck. My experience has been that cars in Austria rent for more than the same car in Germany. Avis charges a big fee for a second driver.
Yes, there are the normal extensive car rental facilities at Strauss airport in Munich! And one can drive to Innsbruck without having to visit the city center of Munich!!
As for the sights to see in Innsbruck, after 3 visits there, I have yet to see anything that lures me back for a 4th visit. Perhaps there is something there of great appeal and I just missed it. I expected the golden roof to be larger than a golf umbrella! But that becomes a personal issue.
