Mt. Vesuvius From Pompeii Bus Info
I would like to update my Pompeii Area directions posted here http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34665492
The info on my post is outdated as I used bus departures from Ercolano/Herculaneum only.
Today there are only 2 bus departures per day from there.
The majority of bus departures are now from Pompeii.
So could anyone with info on this trip give me some detailed directions about this Pompeii-Mt. Vesuvius bus?
Please start at the Pompeii Scavi Circumvesuviana Station.
Where did you buy your tickets?
Cost?
Where exactly from the station is the bus stop?
Is the bus stop marked?
Any info about the bus (white, blue, etc. Is it signposted, if so how)?
Any other info you can think of?
Here are the new Vesuvius Bus Schedules;
www.comune.ercolano.na.it/
At the bottom of page click-on the 'Trasporti' link. Now at the bottom of that page click-on the 'Orari e prezzi dei trasporti per il Vesuvio' link.
Also is it me? But everytime I cut & paste the URL for the *exact page* that the bus schedules are on it doesn't work. So I must go thru 2 links from the homepage posted above to get to the bus schedules.
Regards, Walter

Fare: € 8.60 round trip. Journey time: 70 mins

Once again 'Thanks Steve'
I can't open a .pdf with WebTv so that is why I couldn't 'cut and paste' that URL but I could get to that website by going thru the backdoor.
But now I know that I can use that URL you posted in my directions because it does work for computer users.

Steve,
Your info is exactly what we need for our trip! I have one other question. We need to be back to our ship by 7 PM. If we get to Pompeii at opening, what time should we leave to go to Mt. Vesuvius? And when should we depart Vesuvius to make it to the ship?

Hi Kelkel - You would need to catch the 14.55 return bus from the top of Vesuvius to Pompeii (- as the later one would be cutting it fine).
What time you go up really depends how long you want to be up there

Steve,
You have been so helpful...I have one last question. From Vesuvius if we have time, how would you recommend going to Herculeneum? And is there a train station at Ercolano that will take us back to Napoli Centrale for the ship? Do you recommend that we take a taxi or walk from station to port?

Kelkel - There is an earlier bus down from Vesuvius (- dep 13.55) which goes to Ercolano (- arr. 14.30).
http://www.comune.ercolano.na.it/erc...suvio_2006.pdf
You can catch the Circumvesuviana from Ercolano station back to Napoli Centrale.
Personally I'd jump on the tram (No.1) from Piazza Garibaldi down to the port.
If you decide to go by taxi, fix the fare before you get in.
Hope this helps ...
Steve
P.S. If the timing works for you, you could do Vesuvius first by bus from Ercolano (- dep. 08.25), then catch the bus down from Vesuvius to Pompeii, then finish at Ercolano.
You can check times on the above link.

Thanks, Steve! Several people on the threads say that Vesuvius isn't worth the trip up as the view is usually compromised by clouds. Is this correct? Would you bypass Vesuvius to do the museum instead? Which tram do you refer to to take to the port?Piazza Garibaldi is the same as Napoli Centrale, correct? Sorry..I did end up asking more questions!

"Vesuvius isn't worth the trip up as the view is usually compromised by clouds. Is this correct?" It is correct, depending on the time of year and weather when you go, because I was there and the clouds prevented any view of the crater.

Kelkel - Weatherwise you can decide on the day if visibility is good.
If you can see the top - fine. If not ... don't bother.
Museum or Vesuvius? Your call ...
Yes - Piazza Garibaldi is outside Napoli Centrale.
Tram No 1 goes down to the port from there (- the stop is on the far side of the piazza).
Get tickets in advance from the kiosk in the middle of the piazza - and
N.B. don't forget to validate them on boarding.
Pompeii, Ercolano and museum in one day might be too much, I think - but it depends how long you want to spend in Pompeii. (Some people can 'see' Pompeii in 2 hours, for others 4 hours isn't enough ..._
Hope this helps ...
