Mt. Pilatus or Mt. Rigi?

Hi Folks,

We are a family of 3 adults, basically would like to do some sight-seeing. We will have 2 days in Lucerne in June, and plan to spend the first day going up to a mountain. Since it is a Monday and the museums would be closed, otherwise would have a bit more flexibility in choosing 1 of the 2 days. We probably would start around noon (coming from Basel). Should we go to Mt. Pilatus or Mt. Rigi? Our itinerary is pretty much fixed with all the hotels booked. If it rains, is it still worthwhile to go just to experience the cogwheel train and cable car? Or, would it be too miserable and should just stay in Lucerne if it rains?
Thank you.

There's one more alternative from Lucerne: a trip up to Engleberg by rail (great scenery along the way but you'll end up seeing some of it twice) and then the three-stage ascent of Mt. Titlis from there. The whole thing can be done in 1/2 day. Just a thought.

I 2nd Engleberg. We were there this past mid-April. Spectacular ride (3 cable cars) up. Then snow on top and we walked around and played in the snow - with skiers and snowboarders doing their thing as well. Of course, it was a sunny day on top of the mountain, so we lucked out. Make sure you check out the weather at the tops of these mountains before you head out to them. Can see it on some TV stations, or via internet which shows you pix of the mountains and those areas . Or just ask your hotel's front desk to check it for you. Can be raining in Lucerne, but OK at the mountain tops (and vice versa).

Have not been to Pilatus. But, I have been to Mt. Rigi. Lovely lake trip and then cable or funicular up there. We were there in September, so no snow on top, but beautiful vistas.

I third the Engelberg trip. Even if it rains, then you bag the ascent up the Mountain as the town itself is just too charming with a neat Abbey to explore. If the weather is nice, A lunch idea is to bypass Luzern and have lunch on the lake terrace at the Hotel Winkelreid in the town of Stansstad. Very Very good traditional Swiss food.

Agree. Do the engelberg rail up. We also did a boat ride/ cruise on our return. It was wonderful.
