Looks spectacular. Any Fodorites there right now?

I'll be there in 27 days. Can't wait to see Mt. Etna again.

Missed one a few years ago by a few days.

Rialtogrl - lucky you! I loved Sicily.

Will be there at the end of April! Would love to see this spectacular display...as long as no one is getting hurt and nothing damaged by the eruption!

Great photos. I'm glad that miss Etna's eruptions have been nurturing Sicilian people more than harming them, good to hear.

Ten people hurt in latest eruption:

Thanks for the info, thursdaysd.

Im surprised that the government allows people up there when there have been recent eruptions. Maybe this news crew had special permission.

We went up onto the lower slopes in September but nowhere near the site of any recent eruptions. Our guide was showing us the devastation wrought by an eruption about 12 years ago when a hotel and other buildings were destroyed but he was at pains to explain that no-one was hurt as the lava moves so slowly. I think what happened here was that the lava met the snow and "poof" - it was the subsequent explosion which took the observers unawares.

but it does go to show how dangerous "mother nature" can be.

Last night's the TV news report had over 20 injured. Wasn't there any warning so visitors could be kept away from the site?
