Moving to London
It's official! We're moving to London. I realize this is a travel help forum, not a moving help forum. However I was hoping my London fodors cohorts including other expats here who've made the move to London would be so kind as to offer suggestions for resources (books, websites, forums) to find info on getting successfully settled in London, especially with kids! We spent 4 months in London in 2006, so we at least partially know what we're getting ourselves into, but would love any kind of advice, tips those here could offer. Many thanks!

I am jealous, samtraveler!
I lived in London for about 7 months in 2002-2003. I wanted to stay longer, but it just wasn't meant to be. I used a book called "Living and Working in London" for some basic advice. The Junior League of London also publishes a book called "Living in London: A Practical Guide," that is supposed to be good, especially for issues regarding children and schools. There are expat forums, although I don't know what they are off the top of my head. They should come up in a Google search. Good luck and have fun!! |
Our family moved to London in Fall 2006. We started a blog for our friends and family about our adventures. There are tons of information about moving, living in London with kids etc. Here is the link www.burlaki.com

My husband and I moved to Edinburgh 2 years ago and found the forums at www.uk-yankee.com invaluable. There's tons of advice on there about shipping, etc. that was really helpful.
Good luck! |
We also moved to the UK a couple of years ago. We're from Australia. Some useful websites are:
http://www.londontown.com/LondonPC for postcodes and what each area is like http://www.upmystreet.com/ for all sorts of useful info, you can find out about local services, crime in the area, where's my nearest supermarket, hairdressers, you name it. http://www.streetsensation.co.uk/ shows you what is on some major streets http://www.rac.co.uk/ for route planning etc http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/ for mobile phones, these shops are on every corner http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk for London public transport http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ for train info all over the UK I have loads more but I bet your head is hurting now. The most stressful week of my life was the week before we left to come to the UK so good luck! Kay |
