Law of "common purpose": if he said it, he knew there was a gun - therefore he was as responsible for what was done with it as the person who held it (tough, but that had been the law for ages). Whatever he might or might not have meant wasn't relevant.

If he said it.

If he could be considered to have had an adult understanding of responsibility.

Those were the issues: but the standards of 1953 were rather different from today's.

Which, in the US, did allow someone mentally retarded to be executed just before a recent election, as I recall.

Was it Bush who allowed that to go ahead?
The poor thing ate the main course of his last meal and said that he would save his pudding until afterwards.

Patrick/London...

There is some doubt as to whether Bentley made the statement. As the trial, Craig testified he didn't hear it, if it was said, anyway.

The fact is Craig was the murderer but because he was too young, he could not be hung. He was sentenced to be datained at her majesty's discretion or something like that. In actuality, he served 10 years for the murder.

Bentley was strung up because they needed somebody to take the fall. Many members of Parliament wanted a hearing on the matter but the government refused to discuss the case until after sentence was carried out. The jury recommended mercy but the chief justice failed to pass that recommendation along to the Home Secretary, some clown named Fyfe.

This was the 20th century. Surely this represented one of the biggest miscarriages in a country that prides itself on the protection of its citizens.

The only other country where such a miscarriage of justice could have occurred is the USA....

See the movie...it does show quite a bit about the London of that era (and you see quite a few scenes of routemasters too)....

Routemasters weren't around then. Probably RTs.

(Thinks: must get out more.)

How about To Sir With Love.

Actually they probably were routemasters as the film was done in 1990...I don't remember if these were old scenes that were interposed into the film or freshly filmed scenes...but they were red and double decked (not the box ones of today)......

I do know the facts of the case, and I feel as you, xyz. I was merely pointing out that it wasn't simply a case of what he meant by that particular phrase.

Harry Potter - Platform 9 3/4 Leadenhall Market - Australia House.

There was a scene from The Dark Knight that was in London - a restuarant.
