Movies set in Italy?

The weather here today is so bleak, it's only good for watching a movie or 2. Can anyone recommend a good movie that is about or is set in Italy? Cheers

Enchanted April is one of my all time favs.

LE CADEAU
TEA WITH MUSSOLI
TUSCAN NIGHTS?

Bread and Tulips is a really good one, esp. for scenes in Venice.
The Talented Mr. Ripley with Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwenyth Paltrow is a pretty dark, bleak movie but the scenes of Mangiabello (sp?), Rome, Venice and San Remo are great.

I got Bread and Tulips, Cinimea Paradiso, Under The Tuscan Sun and The Talent Mr Ripley.

I really enjoyed Bread and Tulips (great story loved it), I am only part way throught Cinimea Paradiso which I am loving. I liked under the Tuscan Sun and I had seen The Talented Mr Ripley before but had paid no attention to the location or the language, this time I enjoyed it in a different way.
Can't wait for another wet weekend to get some more recommendations :)

Do watch My House in Umbria with Maggie Smith. It is excellent.

I think some of the scenes in The Talented Mr R are on the lovely (was there in June!) islands of Ischia and Procida, in the Bay of Naples.

I agree w/ you Tiff -- still love Enchanted April, esp on a gloomy day.

Annabelle2, I believe most of the scence in The Talented Mr Ripley were shot in Ischia. I will be going there in June got any recommendations for things to do and see. We will be staying for 2 nights.

My House in Umbria and Enchanted April are now on my list.
Thanks

Stealing Beauty (1996) - for Tuscan countryside

For vicarious travel, Only You, with Marisa Tomei etc. I watch for the locations....from Pittsburgh to Venice, Rome, Positano and Le Sirenuse.

We stayed 4 nights on Ischia. It was quite magical. If you click on my name and look for some past threads about Ischia, I got a lot of good information about the island from other fodorites.

Let me know if you find this thread, and if any of the information is helpful. I would be happy to give details on anything that strikes your interest.

We really enjoyed Ischia!

There is a new movie set solely in Venice...called Casanova. The trailers look good.

grandmere Dec 13th, 2005 05:18 AM

Il Postino
Malena
Don't Look Now--an eerie oldie
The Garden of the Finzi-Continis

And for some even older oldies, Roman Holiday and also Rome Adventure

Tiff, love Enchanted April, too!

This thread has me thinking about another old one, set in Florence, I believe. American's daughter and wife are kidnapped in US, and years later, the daughter, who looks like the mother, is planted in Florence to lure him into thinking he's seeing ghosts when visiting, etc. Cigale, I think you know the name of this one--it's been mentioned here before. Probably same era as Don't Look Now.

cigalechanta Dec 13th, 2005 01:38 PM

Ah, I remember Genevieve Byjold(sp?) )she was in the wonderful "king of Hearts" The title was something like Obsession. I'll look at get back to you.

cigalechanta Dec 13th, 2005 01:41 PM

Found it! I was correct.Geneviere Bujold, Cliff Robertson in Obsession 1976 by Brian de Palma
