'A Year in Provence', 6 hours in four parts, winter, spring, summer, and autumn. A London food journalist couple land in truffle and vin ordinaire country. The locals are all interesting characters as the Brits get involved in their machinations of avoiding the VAT tax, getting the baker's wife to return home, offing a noisy rooster, trucking the grape harvest to the processing plant in an unregistered truck while skirting the gandarmes who are waiting for them. About 1993.

For Paris: Diva (the subtitled version, NOT the dubbed version) and Frantic (one of Harrison Ford's lesser known pics). And the original La Femme Nikita (also subtitled, not dubbed).

It's hard to pick a favorite, and I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "films about Europe or European culture" (many films reveal certain dimensions about a culture through their backdrops and story-telling, but aren't "about" the culture per se). In any case ...<BR><BR>I love Truffaut's films. They give you various backgrounds/views of French culture while illuminating human nature. He made many good to great films, including The 400 Blows, Stolen Kisses, The Last Metro, The Man Who Loved Women, Jules and Jim, The Story of Adele H. <BR><BR>Other great films for France would include: Goddard's Breathless, Carne's Children of Paradise, Yuri Maman's Window to Paris (set in St. Petersburg and Paris), Yves Robert's My Father's Glory and My Mother's Castle, Webber's The Dinner Guest, Vigo's L'Atalante, Beineix's Diva (great film all around).<BR><BR>For a funny look at life in the French suburbs, check out Ma Vie en Rose, where life comes complete with mini-vans and backyard barbies. <BR><BR>French historical goodies would include Queen Margot, The Horseman on the Roof, The Return of Martin Guerre, Abel Gance's silent epic Napoleon.<BR><BR>Italy: Fellini's 8 1/2 and Amarcord. Bertolucci's The Conformist.<BR><BR>Ireland: Into the West, The Dead, The War of the Buttons, The Van<BR><BR>Germany: Many of Wim Wenders' films, including Alice in the Cities, Wings of Desire, The Kings of the Road. Also, Michael Verhoeven's The Nasty Girl. <BR><BR>Poland: Wajda's Man of Iron<BR><BR>Scandinavia: Bergman's Fanny and Alexander<BR><BR>Scotland: John Forsyth's films, including Comfort and Joy, and Local Hero.<BR><BR>I could list a lot more "favorites" like these. I love foreign films. Also love the Audrey Hepburn films set in Paris, like Love in the Afternoon, Charade, Funny Face. Hope I haven't gone on too long.<BR><BR>
