Mount Ventoux trivia question....

OK, lets see just how clever the Fodor community is...

What is the origin of the name Ventoux ?

An exceptionally fantastic prize offered to the first correct response. Winner to be at the sole discretion of the judge (i.e. me) unless he is completely over-ruled by everyone else.

Well since you asked, I did a google search and found the following. There could well be other explanations but I have taken the first one listed on the search result.

> son appellation semblerait remonter au I er ou II ème siècle. Son origine Vintur, le nom d’une divinité des sommets ; en langage celte, Ven-Top désignerait une cime neigeuse.

Vintur = a divinity of the summits. Does this correspond the info you got?

Without above, I would have thought of Vent (wind) or Ventre (belly).

Bravo ! That was even quicker than I expected. Too bad for all those guys still asleep across the ocean. I declare you to be the winner of the first annual Mount Ventoux trivia contest. And I didn't even get to post my tie-breaker question...

-Kevin

p.s.: next year we will have to run this contest without google ! Those guys make life way too easy.

Kevin, I would have thought something to do with wind, so this is interesting news indeed. Thanks.

Do we have to wait for a year for the next question? You did say you had a tie-breaker, maybe you could roll that one out soon ...
