Moulin Rouge

We're planning to visit Paris in August for my husband's 70th birthday. He casually mentioned going to the Moulin Rouge for dinner. Should we just see the show or have the dinner show? Is it worth it for a birtday celebration?? Also, dress code??

Transfers to the restaurant, we will be at a hotel near the Louve??

Any information greatly apprecitated. Thank you.

I can't really tell you whether it's worth it or not, or whether you should have dinner, as those depend so much on personal taste and what kind of entertainment you enjoy, and how you view that kind of expenditure. I know many people do enjoy this show and many others do not. If you generally enjoy the kind of variety shows you'd see in Las Vegas with showgirls, feathers, some nudity, that kind of thing, you will likely enjoy it. I think the consensus is that the meal is rather expensive for the quality (I'm sure you can have a much better meal elsewhere for that price or much less), but others just might enjoy that as an evening out without expecting haute cuisine. I think the meal costs about 30-50 euro extra per person and may not be great but I don't think it's supposed to be awful. There have been several threads on here with a variety of comments from folks who've seen it with or without dining, which might help you decide, you can probably find them by a search with "moulin".

As for getting there, I can tell you that. It is right across the street from the Blanche metro stop, so if you feel comfortable taking the metro around Paris, that would be easy enough. YOu might want to take the metro there, and then a cab back to the hotel at ending. I often think it's easier to go a little farther on a metro line to avoid transfers myself, so think the easiest route would be taking metro line 1 (the one that has Louvre stops) west to the CDG Etoile stop, then transfer to line 2 going north which has the Blanche stop on it. I imagine there will be plenty of cabs around there outside when it's finished that you can get one. In Paris, you usually cannot flag one but must get one at a taxi station and there is one right there at Place Blanche. YOu could take a cab there instead of metro if you wished, also, it shouldn't cost more than about US$10, I'd guess; your hotel should call one for you if there isn't a taxi station near the hotel and that might be nice for a special event.

As for dress code, you won't have to get super dressed up, if that's your concern. I'm sure whatever "nice" clothing you'd normally wear to go out to things in the evening, rather than your daytime sightseeing garb, would be fine. I think to make it a special event and to be most appropriate, it would be best if your husband wore some kind of jacket and a tie, and you should have some nice shoes and a quasi-"dressy" dress or skirt and blouse/top. I expect due to the large number of tourists, dress will be a little more casual than usual in the summer there. You don't have to wear fancy cocktail clothes, but not super-casual or sporty. If your husband thinks it will be fun and is looking forward to it (and knows what kind of show it is), I think it sounds like an okay idea, as long as you don't expect it to be as glamorous and special as it was historically or in films. As I said, you really have to know what kind of entertainment you like.
I have been to this show last year and it was a fine show, we had the dinner and it was fine. The only benefit to having the dinner is that you get a table right up front. you are literally at the foot of the stage, this is also helpful if you would like to dance as during dinner they have a lovely band playing jazz type dance music.
If you only go for the show you are in the nose bleed section. Dinner also includes champagne, water etc. We always go for the highest level in the dinner and it's always o.k. . Since it is such a special occasion get the photo too, they give you a nice picture, matchbook and postcard.
