Motor Coach Day Trips out of Rome
I am looking for day trips out of Rome to places such as Capri and Assisi. Are such trips available for non-Italian speaking Americans?

Your hotel will usually have pamphlets around the front desk and will be happy to make arrangements, they get a commission:). Also check-out the American Express office which is located to the right (50m) of the Spanish Steps (standing at the bottom facing the steps). I *think* Capri (if they have a day tour) would be a "we're here, now let's go" type tour:). Figure at least 6hr R/T downtown Rome to Naples Pier to Rome (reststops & traffic). And then add waiting/riding on the hydrofoil then a bus to the tourist site and return to Naples. I think a day trip to Assisi would be better time spent if those are your choices (my guess 5-6hr traveling R/T). I believe they also have 1/2 day tours of the Catacombs which is good because you must be escorted thru them anyway (I went on my own and had to take a French tour). A Pompeii bus tours usually lasts 12-14hrs but only ~2hrs is actually spent *in* Pompeii, travel time and stops at factory outlets where the guide and driver get commission on the tour sales. Ostia Antica (Pompeii like city) is ~1hr from Rome which is also a nice day trip. The bottom line, you will have *no* problem finding english speaking tours. But go on your own with a good guidebook and info you've gathered on this and other forums and you'll see alot more. HTH Regards, Walter
two websites where you can find tours of ROme, and some side trips:

www.scalareale.com
www.initaly.com

I think these both offer day trips to Pompeii, Ostia, and Tivoli which would be far closer than either Capri or Assisi. If its Umbria you want you could also consider Orvieto which is much closer than Assisi.

Beth: Actually Assisi is closer to Rome than Naples is. Using a road map I'd say it's ~160km (100mi) from Rome. "Let's Go" mentions a daily *public* bus to Rome at 3hrs travel time. Now I'm thinking of taking a day-tour to Assisi (Nov), I didn't realize it was that close:))). Regards, Walter
Assisi is a perfect day trip by tour bus--I've done it. It's an all day trip, with lunch in Assisi usually included. There are many of them, just ask the hotel concierge for brochures or better yet, ask him to book one for you..

For Capri, I took the train to Sorrento, (you have to make a change in the Naples station) and stayed for several nights. The whole trip takes about 3 hours, as I recall. I also don't think it's a realistic day trip, but if you have the time, I'd stay in Sorrento for a couple of nights and do Capri on 1 day, and the Amalfi coast the next. Both can be done via public transportation--the ferry to Capri, and public bus down the Amalfi drive.

Absolutely! I took a day trip bus tour to Assisi and it was perfect! It even included lunch at one of the hotels in Assisi. Your hotel concierge will certainly have information about these types of tours and may even be able to book you on one.
