MotherinLaw won't ride the Metro in Barcelona

Forgot to add Mother in Law is claustrophobic. What is the best area to stay so that we are not dependent on the Metro? i.e., what neighborhood has good access to major attractions but is still quiet and not too touristy?

you are better off posting this on your other thread rather creating a new one.

Anyhow, Barcelona is quite walkable and you do not need to rely on the metro to get around. In addition to buses, cabs are cheap if needed.

The Eixample area would be quiet and less touristy, but still close to attractions, though if you want to walk most everywhere, I think you would be best in the center - i.e. Born, Barri Gotic, etc.

I am personally a fan of staying in the Barri Gotic as you can reach many areas on foot. The only attraction that would require transportation is if you want to see the Sagrada Familia (which I highly recommend)or Parc Guell. The city has a good website for public transportation and you can enter your starting and ending destinations as well as indicate "Bus only." The website can be found here: http://www.tmb.net/en_US/home.jsp

And she does not have problem flying? (presuming that is how you will be getting to Barcelona)

In addition to Cristina's advice, the HOHO tour bus will take you to the "further locales" - Parc Guell, Sagrada Familia, the Miro Museum and this dumb recreated medieval structure which I would personally avoid, but the HOHO will take you there.

I'm not claustrophobic, but I found the Barri Gotic inducing claustrophobia in me. It's mainly narrow blind and sunless alleys.

That to me? I can't remember if I bothered to go in La Sagrada Familia. I have next to no interest in Gaudi's work.
