Mother daughter summer
 

I would like to take my daughter on a month-month and a half long trip this summer. She is 16 and I think this might be the last trip she will want to take with me for a few years. If you could take your daughter any where where would you go?

Depends on your interests and budget. What worked for me and my daughters on our separate trips to Europe would probably be not to your liking and visa versa.

Barbmike- I guess intrest would be the only issue. Budget is what you make it. What are your thoughts- what did your daughters like at this age?

I'm taking my daughter, who will be 16 next year, on another trip next summer. We won't be able to go to all her preferred places, but these are, in no particular order:
London
Edinburgh (for the festival)
Berlin
Ireland (she hasn't been here, but has been to the other places)
Amsterdam

Amsterdam is on the list, because we fly into there. The other places are still up for discussion.

My 17 year old sister is really into traveling and she just got back from Greece, which she loved. She also enjoyed Germany a lot when she was younger, and when she did an exchange to Ireland, was really happy there. So, I think that there are a lot of different places you and your daughter would like. That said, this is a mother-daughter thing, so your tastes should weight in as well. I went to Italy with my mother last year and had a great time, and in a few weeks my Dad and I are doing Barcelona, Alicante and Morocco together, all places I know and love. I am taking him there because I know he is dying to see them and I am happy to go again.

If at age 16 someone had given my mother and I a month and said "go somewhere," I would have wanted to do the grand tour, probably arriving in Paris and staying, then hitting London, then down to Barcelona and Madrid. But, that was before I knew what I know now, which is that everywhere has a lot to offer and going to the big places, while fun to brag about, is not always the best option. Also, for 4-6 weeks, city travel can be expensive. Have you considered renting a place for 2 weeks on the Italian coast for some quality time and village visits, then doing the rest in a city?

For frst timers, I suggest at least one week in London followed by at least one week in Paris.

6 weeks is a long time on the road, and enforced intimacy can become a drag.

May I suggest 4 weeks as follows?

My mom and I really enjoyed visiting Amsterdam, Germany, and Salzburg this past summer. Here is a C&P of our itinerary:
June 12- Arrive Amsterdam & Stay at Hotel Fita
June 13-14 Amsterdam and maybe a side trip to Haarlem.
June 15- Train to Koln, pick up rental car and drive to Cochem. Stay at Hotel Thul.
June 16- Berg Eltz and enjoy wine festival
June 17- Drive to Rothenburg. Stay at Gasthof Greifen
June 18- Rothenburg
June 19- Drive to Hohenschwangau via Romantic Road
June 20- Tour Ludwig's castles amd drive to Salzburg- stay at Bloberger Hof
June 21-23 SOM tour, salt mine tour, Eagle's Nest, Hallstatt, baths...
June 24- Drive to Munich and drop off car. Stay at Hotel Blauer Bock.
June 25- Tour Dachau & explore Munich
June 26- HOME

We had a great time!!! However, we had already visited London and Paris.
