Most Scenic Route Heiligenblut to Garmisch

Thanks all for my route from Berchtesgaden to Heiligenblut, the drive through Lofer looks great!

So now, how about a great scenic drive from Heiligenblut to Garmisch-Partenkirchen?

Do we go a more northern route through Zell Am See again, then to Worgl & Innsbruck, or a southern route through Brunico, Vipiteno & Innsbruck? Google says only about 20 mins difference.

Or in the middle through Zell am Ziller?

Would love a great lunch stop along the way?

Which is the best scenery?

Hi wrenwood,

That's a tough one. We've driven both routes and I'd lean towards the Mittersill, Gerlos Pass, Zillertal route.

If you had an overnight to do this drive, I'd suggest driving through and spending a night in the Dolomites: Lienz, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Colfosco, Gardena Pass, Ortisei, Sterzing, Innsbruck to Garmisch. This is about a 6 to 7 hour drive non stop.

If you wanted to really see the Dolomites, take the "southern route" and at Brunico, head south to La Villa/Stern then to Colfosco, Gardena Pass, Ortisei, Sterzing, Innsbruck and Garmisch. The Gardena Pass is an extremely scenic drive like the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse. This adds about 1:30 to your original "southern route". The scenery between La Villa/Stern and Ortisei is quintessential Dolomites. The Gardena Pass gets you up close to some of the peaks.

Have a safe trip and enjoy.

Wow, thanks Paul that looks like a great option! We plant to visit the Dolomites someday, it would be great to get a "teaser" view of them!

Whatever way we go we'll play it by ear depending on weather.
