Most Scenic driving route and stopping points from Rome to Siena

Three of us will be driving our rental car from the Termini station to Siena (after spending 5 nights in Rome) in late September. We would like your advice on the most scenic southern route between Rome and Siena avoiding the autostrada as much as possible. I have good maps which indicate in green which routes are considered scenic and have read glowing reports about Pienza, Montalcino, San Quirico D'Orcia, Montepulciano and Buonconvento as possible stops en route. Logistically, we want the most scenic route but have to narrow down the stops. Should we take the Via Cassia the whole way or take A1 to the Chiusi exit and then pass by the towns? . I would appreciate expert advice from locals who know the area and routes Thank you for your kind advice.

First, I would not get the car at Termini unless you are experienced in city driving in Italy. I would train to Orvieto to get the car---see Orvieto---and then drive west to SS-2 and north to Bagno Vignoni, San Quirico, and either Pienza or Montalcino---then on to Siena. Have fun !

PS--get the car first in Orvieto and then drive aorund the bluff to enter town on the west side near the fabulous Duomo.
