How about Greece? A bit of easy-breezy island hopping or even just camp out on one cozy little island -beaches, hiking, monasteries and ruins depending on where you are. I loved traditional un-touristy Chios with its great quiet beaches, caves, historical sites and charming mastic villages.

You could then head over to wonderful Lesvos depending on your time.

Of course the classic white-houses of the cyclades are wonderful too and mainland Greece is excellent and most often overlooked.

Greece may be right up your alley!

Have fun,

Mainz, Germany- a wonderful little city on the Rhine. There's a beautiful path for walking or jogging, lots of great little restaurants, wine houses, neat little shops.

Thanks everyone....you have given us so many ideas.

Gruezi - I am interested in more info on Sils for sure...

Looking forward to some fun vacation planning....and the trip, of course.

My vote is the "Grand Tremezzo" hotel on Lake Como. Have a car to go a few places for dinner, take the boats to Bellagio, Varenna, Mennagio, etc. during the day. Or just relax in the hotel"s beautiful garden.

My vote for best restaurant in the area is "Al Velue" in the hills above the lake, stunning views, outdoor terrace, and wonderful food. About a 5 min. drive from the "Tremezzo". Also great, Italian wine.

Anyone out there who mentioned the Dolomites - How did you get there? Plane to Milan and then car? From Venice?

This is an old thread, but nobody mentioned the Mosel River in Germany. Smaller and prettier than the Rhine, lined with vineyards, very cute small towns.
