Hi all,

I am going the Amalfi Coast and Rome for my honeymoon in June. We are spending our last night in the Amalfi Coast in Capri, then going straight to Rome.

Based on my research and information I've gotten here, I think the best thing to do is take the ferry from Capri to Naples, then take the train from Naples to Rome. It appears that the most direct way to do this requires taking the ferry from Capri to the Molo Beverello port in Naples, then take a cab to the Mergellina port, where the train to Rome also leaves.

Does this sounds correct? Any other suggestions? As I said I'd like this travel to have as few transfers as possible - we'll have all our luggage with us too.

Get a hydrofoil (quicker than a ferry) to Molo Beverello & get a taxi to the main Naples railway station at piazza Garibaldi.

From Molo Beverello it's a short tram ride (- tram No.1) to the main railway station at Piazza Garibaldi.
Get tickets in advance (- from Molo Beverello newspaper kiosk) - and 'validate' them on boarding.

N.B. If you choose to take a taxi as Caroline suggests agree the price before you get in.

Out of curiosity, why Piazza Garibaldi instead of Mergellina? The train stops at both places.

We could probably take the tram if it is that convenient. Do you know about how long the "short tram ride" is? I'm trying to figure out when we'll need to leave Capri.

Would it be recommended to by train tickets ahead of time on the Trentitalia web site?

Steve will know the timetable details, but I think it's highly unlikely that all the trains, especially the fast ones, stop at Mergellina which is just a suburb.

Steve has a good point about the chance of being ripped off by taxi drivers. (In fact when we spent a week in Naples, we got by without getting a single taxi !) If you want to play safe like I did the first time I did that journey (on my own), you could go to a travel agent in Capri and get them both to sell you a hydrofoil ticket and book a prepaid taxi to meet you at Molo Beverello.

P.S. I think on that occasion I may have got the travel agent to sell me a train ticket too; but every other time I've caught a train in Italy, I've just turned up at the station & used a self-service machine (which has an English option) to buy a ticket for the next fastish train. I've only ever bought singles, though - so not sure if there are savings to be made by booking returns in advance. It all seems very cheap comapred to traion fares here in the UK !

The main Naples-Rome service leaves from Napoli Centrale.

P.S. The tram ride is about 10 mins. Get off at Piazza Garibaldi.
The railway station is across the piazza.

So the Napoli Centrale station is basically at Piazza Garibaldi? When I looked up the train schedule before posting, there were trains that left from Pizza Garibaldi and also trains that left from Napoli Centrale. Is this the same departure location?

Napoli Piazza Garibali station is below ground level and is reached by stairs from Napoli Centrale station.
Trains from Napoli Piazza Garibaldi to Roma go via Mergellina station, but trains from Napoli Centrale do not pass through Mergellina. Most of the fast trains to Roma go from Napoli Centrale.
