Most convenient area to stay in Florence????

Now that Rome has been booked, I need to book Florence (last will be venice).

What is the most convenient, safe area to get an apartment in Florence? We want to be close to touristy things in this city...

also...any apartment or hotel recommendations?

Florence is extremely small. Any place you book between the train station and the river will be in tourist central.

Be careful with apartments right on the piazza Duomo, or the piazza Signoria or on top of the San Lorenzo market. They can be quite noisy because of late night crowds enjoying the outdoor bars or activity to set up the market.

If you are going after April, you will want air con so you can close your windows at night to keep out mosquitoes (Venice too).

PS: you should use a booking site like booking.com or venere.com if you are looking for hotels. They also have some apartments. You can put in your travel dates and your budget, and see what's available s. Plus, you can narrow your search to only hotels with air-con, wi-fi, etc. and see loads of pictures. You can read very recent user reviews right on the websites. That way, you can know what 25 or 100 people thought of a place rather than 4. You can usually find a hotel that's right for you within 15 minutes of looking.

Golden,

Will there be mosquitoes in Florence in Oct/Nov?

Thanks

We stayed in San Lorenzo area in this apartment and loved the area.

cafe,

If I booked a hotel by the river, I would want to be able to close the windows at night against the possibility of mosquitoes even in early November because you can get "indian" summers -- but I am one of those people that a mosquito will find if it has to travel from Sicily to find me, so I am hyper-vigilant.

But another problem with booking without air con at almost anytime of year in Florence is that there is a lot of street noise in Florence almost all year round. If you are counting on leaving your windows open to sleep, you can get woken up at dawn by rubbish collection and other things (or kept up late at night by partying tourists wandering through the streets singing, etc).

My experience of hotel rooms is that they heat up quickly with people moving around in them, even when it isn't summer.

I stayed here:

and really liked the b&b and location. It is right behind the old market. Easy walk to the train station.

cafegoddess - There are mosquitoes in Venice when I’m there every March, so I would imagine they’ll be in Florence in October, especially if it’s warm.

Thank you! Booked in city center at B&b La Dimora Degli Angeli :)
