Mosquitoes in Sardinia?
 

Hi, we are thinking of going to Sardinia but last time we were there in October, there was a major mosquito problem. Did anyone else have any such issues and in which part of Sardinia? We are going with our 1 year old this time and are trying to know which areas to stay away from. Thank you!

Been six times at various times of the year and unlike the Outer Banks of NC or The Turks and Caicos : I've never seen them as an issue.

However, there are large areas near Cagliari and Aristano which have lagoons.

Where are you staying ?

Our visits were with our son between the age of 6 months and 5. It's just such a perfect destination for relaxing with young children with so many safe beaches.

We were there in May, a few years ago, and didn't notice any mosquitoes. If there are insects about I am the sort who always gets bitten but had no problems at all. We were in the northern part of the island.

All of Sardegna was one of the regions of Italy that this year that saw cases of West Nile virus, an increasing problem in Italy. The past experiences of other travelers really aren't a guide to what will happen during the weeks you traveling because of climate change. It depends on where it has (or hasn't) been raining recently and how long the duration of mild temperatures has been -- plus the local mosquito population. It is not just lagoons but river beds, other wetlands (which even exist in some mountainous areas of Sardegna) that create mosquito breeding grounds.

In addition to mosquito netting (which you should be sure your lodgings offer you) there are are some anti-mosquito products sold in Italian pharmacies that are considered safe for chidlren 1 year or younger.
