Mosel Help
We are staying on the Mosel next summer (Trier 3 days, Beilstein 2 days)and would like to take a day trip by boat on the river. I though perhaps boat to Bernkastel and bus or train back is that possible and/or a good idea. Any other suggestions gratefuly received.
Many thanks |
It's much further from Beilstein to Bernkastel by boat than you think. Even from Bullay - further upstream - it's over 4 hours with the Gebrueder Kolb line. Best bet from Beilstein is a boat up to Cochem, or take the boat from Traben-Trarbach to Bernkastel which is closer to two hours (maybe 5-6 boats per day.)

By the way, there is no bus service to Bernkastel or to Beilstein. The train betweeen Koblenz and Trier stops in Wittlich, where you can catch a bus to Bernkastel.

OOPS. I meant that there is no TRAIN service to Bernkastel and Beilstein. There is indeed bus service.

Do stay in Beilstein and stay at the Hotel Lippman-it was wonderful! Scenic, wonderful food, fun wine cellars ,etc.Even my 23 and 26 year kids thought it was a great trip!
Where are you staying in Trier? We really enjoyed that city also as it has quite alot to offer in terms of eating, sightseeing, etc. |
robbieb: if you're interested, a few years ago we rented an apartment in Bernkastel-Kues for a week, it was around Easter. We rented bicycles from a shop in town, packed a lunch and rode on the bike path along the Mosel to Traben-Trarbach where we loaded our bikes onto the boat and returned to B-K. It was a few hours and very enjoyable.

robbib,
As with "Suspaul" we also rented an apartment in Bernkastel-Kues last September...great Mosel village to explore all of the Mosel area, although we had the benefit of a rental vehicle, there were numerous boat services to travel the Mosel to see all of the villages of note. The restaurants, the castles, the beautiful scenery, the wine and the people were great!....enjoy...mike |
Hotel Haus Lipmann is indeed a very special place--excellent restaurant, too. Just be sure it's Hotel haus Lipmann--there are other Lipmann's who have nice places as well, but this one is the best in my opinion.

Many thanks for all the good advice. I think we will pass on a river trip from Trier and concentrate on the Beilstein / Cochem area which I understand is more scenic with less locks. We will have a rental car so will visit all the villages on the weay from Trier. We will definitely stay at the Hotel Lippman in Beistein and may even reduce Trier to 2 days and stay in Beilstein for 3. In Trier we plan to stay in the Hotel Villa Hugel.
Any restaurant or wine-tasting recommendations gratefully received |
the bernkastel-kues to traben trabach is a nice easy trip to do to feel out the mosel.
you can decide this fairly spontaneously when you are along the mosel. it is quite easy to see how long trips last and how to get back to your starting point. now in the planning it all seems a bit much.. there are so many options. since you will not be able to do them all, the fortunate thing along the mosel is that they are all very satisfying. |
Personally, our family found Cochem very touristy(but worth an afternoon visit).
We really really enjoyed our visit in Beilstein-driving partway up and walking the rest of the way to see the original castle remains;checking out all of the various wine cellars in town after dinner one night(quite a fun experience with a bottle sampled at each cellar!!)and dinner overlooking the river in the Lipmann restaurant while the sun sets. There is a set of tourists that descend on the town in the afternoon but usually leave by 4pm-the magic of this small burb begins. We drove the back roads through the hills/mnountains to sightsee and it was wonderful. We had done a boat trip on the Rhine river and my daughter works on a tall ship so we were more interested in the wineyards and surrounding areas for exploration. Have fun! |
Hi,
We stayed along the Mosel last October and loved it. We found Cochem to be a beautiful old town. It's our favorite town along the Mosel. Bernkastel is a close second! While in the area (Beilstein/Cochem) visit Burg Eltz. The best castle we've ever seen! www.burg-eltz.de If you're interested, we have recent photo's of Burg Eltz and the towns along the Mosel. www.worldisround.com/home/pja1/index.html Paul |
