Moscoe hotels
I am considering taking part in a "working" trip to a village in Russia. My husband would like to meet me in Moscow at the end of my two weeks for five or so days. Does anyone have an idea about hotels in Moscow. We don't want to spend a fortune!

Good morning, Marty
Have not been to Moscow, but here are a couple of RU
web sites to surf for additional information...
www.moscow-guide.ru/
www.intourus.demon.co.uk/
www.ru/
www.gomoscow.miningco.com/
www.interknowledge.com/russia/
Good surfing, Richard of Hickory Hills, IL....
Thanks, Richard! As always, you are a great help. I checked out the websites and Moscow and St. Petersburg look a little less daunting. The Fodor's guide made even the $300 per night hotels sound absolutely horrible. I still welcome any other help anyone can give.

We were on a Russian tour in 1993 and stayed in the hotel built for the Olympics. It was passable. Workmanship left alot to be desired. No trouble in spending U.S. dollars on the streets and flea markets. Have fun!

If you're looking for not a very expensive hotel with a normal service, try then the hotel "Ukraine" ("Ukraina" in Russian). As I live here, in Moscow, I have no personal experience of staying at our hotels, but I got some positive responces about that hotel from my foreign colleagues. Have a nice trip and I think you will be proven that our city (and country) is really not so horrible as you are used to see in news.
Best regards, Konstantin

Who will be processing your visas? As we did the trip all by ourselves (no tour company or work support) we needed to use a large hotel in order to get the ID numbers as registered within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to get our visas. The people at the Embassy in Washington processing our visas would not allow us to use confirmation numbers only. So, we made reservations at nice places, got the registerd ID numbers and then stayed elsewhere (this was in Feb '98). We stayed at the Hotel Moscow (I think that is the name)-- it is an ugly, enormous, non-user friendly buiding that was cheap and very well located -- built by Brezhnev for the Olympics. It took about 3 hours to check in -- a total nightmare. When we came back we read an article in the Economist about it -- it spoke of how it was rat and roach infected and run by the Mafia with frequent shootings -- we saw none of that. It St.Petersberg -- you should go -- take the overnight train from Moscow -- we stayed in a B&B that we found over the internet -- I think we used White Nights. It was GREAT -- a wonderful lady who made us big breakfasts every morning -- she is a physician and her husband an artist. My advice is to stay in people's homes, check out the various B&B agencies -- I think Lonely Planet has a list of them. There were ATMs all over the place so we had no problem getting rubles. Have fun.
