Moroccan currency
I will traveling to Casbalanca next month. Can anyone tell me if the souks and market vendors take US $ or do they prefer dirham?
Thanks |
On my autumn 2001 trip to Morocco the hotel I stayed at was happy to take either French francs or dirhams. They'd probably take euros now.
But in the souks, restaurants, cafés, stores, etc., I never saw anyone dealing with any other currency than dirhams. |
Hi amm,
Almost anyone in the world will take USD at an exchange rate extremely unfavorable to you. |
PS,
An acquaintance recently told me that on a trip to Quebec city he was pleased to find a French restaurant that allowed him to pay with USD traveler's checks instead of Canadian dollars at a 1:1 exchange. I told him that he was lucky to have found such convenience. |
ira, you're bad. :-D

I was in Morocco in January 2004 and as others have said, it's always best to pay in the local currency. If you pay in US$, they will charge a premium for their time and trouble of exchanging, and rightfully so. Once you're in Morocco, don't spend a lot of time shopping around for the best exchange because it's regulated by the government and s/b the same everywhere on any given day.
