More Tuscany & less Venice? Opinions needed for first time trip.

We will be going to Italy for the first time at the end of Sept. Originally we planned to do Rome (3), Tuscany (3), Venice (3). Now my husband thinks we should do Tuscany 4 and Venice 2. Any advice? Please let me know what your personal opinion is. Thank you in advance!

What is included in your "Tuscany" portion - Florence, Siena, Lucca, Hill Villages, Chianti, Val d'Orcia??

What time of year - my answer would be different if traveling from Nov thru Feb, as opposed to March through Oct.

Is your 3-3-3 three "full" days, or does it include transportation time.

My choice would be 4 6 4 for Mar to Oct, but that's not an option.

I'd vote for Tuscany 4 Venice 2. Tuscany should be very beautiful that time of year, and you want to be able to relax and enjoy it, but also explore a couple different places.

I love Venice, but I think you can definitely get a taste in two nights (make sure to stray from the beaten path, though).

IN MY PERSONAL OPINION ROME 3 (CAPITAL) TUSCANY (VERY FAMOUS ABROAD) 3 AND TURIN 3(2006 OLYMPIC HOST CITY): TURIN IS THE HOTTEST CITY NOWADAYS. YOU CAN SIGHTSEEING DOWNTOWN AND COUNTRYSIDE IN PARTICULAR "LANGHE" COUNTRY FOR ITS PARTICULAR PANORAMA AND CUISINE. ASK ME FOR MORE DETAILS IF INTERESTED.

Stu - We haven't narrowed down the Tuscany part yet but I will be using your trip review to assist me in that as well so thanks again! We were looking for some sightseeing & some relaxing (wine tasting, pool lounging, etc). So we're still researching our spot for "base camp."

Timeframes are 9/22-10/02.
3-3-3 would include transportation between these cities.

Unfortunately we aren't able to extend the timeframes but will hopefully be counting on 2nd & 3rd trips someday.

Hi K,

>More Tuscany & less Venice? <

If it were my choice, I would do Venice 5 and Florence 4, with a daytrip to Siena.

I cannot conceive of giving up a day in Venice to wander among rural, provincial, rustic rubes.

I assume you're flying into Rome and out of Venice or vice versa. If it were my first trip, I'd do the first 4 nights in Rome, 3 nights in Tuscany and 2 nights in Venice. That would allow you to get a decent flavor of all 3 regions. Rome is an incredible city and with 4 nights you'll probably be able to hit most of the A-list things to see and do. Anything less than that for a trip of your duration and I'm thinking you might regret spending only 3 nights there, especially if you're arriving there and have some jet lag to deal with which will cut into the sightseeing. That's one area I wouldn't shortchange. I agree that the essence of Venice can be captured in 2 nights, especially if you're ending your trip there as opposed to starting there. Tuscany is beautiful with Florence and a lot of hill towns to explore. To do Florence justice, I think you'd need 1.5 days minimum which would leave another day or so to visit some of the nearby hill towns. And that would be sufficient to get the jist of them.

If you knew you were coming back to Italy, then hitting just 2 areas this time around probably makes sense. If you're not sure what the future holds, I think you can enjoy a trip to all 3 in the time you have, assuming you don't mind being on the pretty constant go. Sounds like a great trip at a good time of year. Enjoy! Dave

Since you asked for personal opinions -- unless you are big on, say, an all-day tour at the Vatican which takes up one day, I'd shave time off of Rome rather than Venice.

"Rubes?" Ouch!

Kaygirl, it's up to you and your interests to divide your time. It sounds like your husband is more interested in the countryside than Venice. A lot of people are. Others think Venice is heaven on earth. It isn't called "La Serenissima" for nothing. Do some research, prioritize the things you want to see/do and figure out how many days you'll need.

Yeah maybe just Rome and Florence, depending on where you plan to fly out of.

If you have to fly out of Rome, then the return to Rome for the return flight eats into your time.
