More Train Station Help

Is there more than one train station in Avignon. I am coming from Lyon to Avignon and I need to know what to ask for when booking my train ticket, also I will need to know if there are more than one, which station is closest to my hotel. I am staying at Hotel Blauvac on Rue Bancasse. Will it be too far to walk to the hotel? Thanks for your help.

Apparently there may be at least two stations, Avignon Centre and Avignon TGV.
Go to the hotel's website for further info:

I did go to the web site, that's why I am not sure. On the map it just shows "Gare", but it doesn't say which one. It's also hard to tell from the map just how far it is to walk from the Gare to the hotel. I suppose I could email the hotel, I just thought maybe someone who has been there might know.

I know what you mean..when I looked it up they speak of the Gare SNCF (which I strongly suspect is the "Centrale" one and not the TGV one)...but talk about the BUSSES and say nothing of the trains but if it is an SNCF gare then trains would have to be involved.
Give it a few more minutes and I bet someone who knows for certain will appear. Cheers!

They are both "gares SNCF." Having taken the TGV to Avignon a few times, I would have to assume your hotel is near the "gare centrale" in downtown Avignon. The TGV station is on the outskirts of the city.

Where you arrive depends on whether you are coming by TGV or a regular train. I would guess that it's the TGV, in which case, you're about three miles from the city centre, so you'll have to take the shuttle (navette) or a taxi. The shuttle runs every 15 minutes to the main station. And according to ViaMichelin.com the station is about a mile from rue Bancasse.

The "gare SNCF" MENTIONED ON THE WEBSITE is what we were speasking of, St. Cirq...and I would still assume it is the "centrale" one, Barb.

Well, it looks like I have the option of going from Lyon Part Dieu to Avignon Centre on the TER. It looks like it takes 2+ hrs 9:25 - 11:48. Or --- I can go on the TGV to Avignon TGV, which takes a little over an hour, but then I would have to get from there to town. But, if it's too far to walk from Gare Centre to hotel anyway, maybe it would be best to just take a taxi from TGV station to hotel. Ok, oh wise Fodorites, what would you do. I realize this is a nit-picky question in the total scheme of things, but I thought I would just ask. Thanks.

I would take the TGV to save the time.

IN my experience, French city maps usually refer to only a regular train station as "Gare SNCF" and if there are two due to a new TGV station being built (as in Aix, Avignon), they label the other one "Gare TGV"

oh, I couldn't view that URL, but in Avignon, the bus station (Gare Routiere) is right next to the old train station.

So, would you take the TGV and then just take a taxi to the hotel?
