This trip sounds wonderful but its only a hour or so on the water..I see some incredible pictures online and an hour is just not going to cut it .. we want more:) is there anything else we can connect up with to get more time traveling through the fjords. We are traveling from Oslo to Bergen next june and will be in Bergen for 4 days maybe 5 before we head to Stockholm. Thanks!

The ferry on the Nærøyfjord between Gudvangen and Flåm is nearly 2 1/2 hours not 1 hr. If you are not bothered about railways then take the ferry return. You can also take ferries to Fjærland from Balestrand and Kaupanger from Gudvangen. There is an express ferry between Flåm and Bergen that takes 5 hrs, but then you are sitting inside watching the wide and not so spectacular Sognefjord (Sognefjord in a Nutshell).

We just got back from a trip to Norway and Sweden. We rented a car in Bergen and drove up the E39 (short ferry crossing) to the 55 towards Balestrand. It is a beautiful trip along the fjord. We stayed a night in Balestrand then continued on the 55 up towards Luster (there is a short ferry crossing ). It was a beautiful trip! We stayed 2 nights at Nes Gard ( a wonderful B& B with an amazing view), drove to a glacier one day and then up to a dam that was phenomenal! We then took the snow road to Flam. It was spectacular! You could head back to Bergen from there. We had to take a 2 hour car ferry (the tunnel was closed due to a fire)which was nice but I think we saw so much more beautiful scenery while driving than we did on the ferry. We would have preferred the tunnel to save time but....when on vacation you have to go with the flow! We loved Norway and would love to go back.

I've also driven the snow road and loved it.

You should look out for stavkirke too - the little wooden churches - sometimes very old indeed - carved with dragons and ornate decoration and quintessentially Norwiegan. There is one not that far from Laerdal I recall.

Btw the Norway in a Nutshell tour is much more than an hour if you do the triangular route using the ferry from Flam to Gudvangen, coach from Gudvangen to Voss, and train from Voss back to Flam.

If you are travelling a long distance to Norway, it may be worth justifying an internal flight to The Lofotens. The scenery is simply stunning.

Whilst in Stockholm take a ferry trip out to Sandhamn through the archipelago. It's very relaxing and the island gives you a perfect example of how Swedish society works. Unlike some countries, the muti-millionaires sail stylish small wooden boats ....because that's all they need. There are good restaurants and good walks round the island.
