More cruisers for Rome?
An article in the Guardian discusses plans of Royal Caribbean to construct another large cruise port, on the Isola Sacra, in the town of Fiumicino, which borders Rome.

It seems some people/countries never learn.
I was saddened by that article. Cruising is terrible for the environment, contributes little to local economies and the only people who truly benefit from it are the cruise-line owners. We get small cruise ships, like Hurtigruten Expedition boats and river cruises visiting in the summer. Most only stay a few hours which means the passengers swarm our town, or rush to visit a nearby town on coaches, and then return to the boat to eat. The passengers don't spend much money, if any and the only thing the town gets is the mooring fee and the clean up of the ships detritus. I would hate to live somewhere bigger ships dock. |
me too. On top of the pollution they generate (which, the more I look into it is immense) they are just to ugly. Desperate to cram as many luxury cabins into as a big a wall of housing. I know people love having a holiday this way and most of those I know are getting enormous discounts because, out of season, that is the only way to fill these things. Then the holiday season runs around and the margins just flood in, while the illness and polution sky rockets. Remember those poor people who got locked up in CA on one with Covid early on. I wouldn't wishing it on my worst enemy.

Bring back Captain Nemo, but spare the warships and sink the cruisers!

The worst of it is that this will be a private cruise terminal, whereas the others in Italy are all government owned or run. What a travesty this would be.
