Montquc near Cahors

We are busily planning our next trip to France. We have spent several weeks in the Dordogne on previous holidays so looking for a different area to explore and are thinking of basing ourselves for a week in the town of Montquc which is close to Cahors.

I have read some favourable things about Montquc but just wondering if any Fodorites have spent anytime there and their impressions of the town and surrounding area.

Thanks.

First of all, the town is spelled Montcuq - and you should know that the name is a bit of a nightmare for a non-French speaker, and a source of great amusement for the French, involving the possibility of referring to what is know in polite society as one's backside (or worse, depending on how you pronounce it. Don't know how liberal Fodor's is, so I wont go into these possibilities.)

In fact there was a well known radio sketch in the 1970's satirizing the name. And in 2007 Montcuq was a 'write-in' winner of most popular town name for a new French edition of monopoly. Got vetoed by Hasbro however.

Apart from that, it's a pretty part of the country, as you can see on their web site.http://www.tourisme-montcuq.com/
It's a hilltop town with great views of the surrounding countryside.

We haven't stayed there, as we live in the Dordogne, and I don't think there are quite as many places to see as there are here. However, Lauzette is also attractive, Moissac is wonderful, St Antonin Noble Val is not far away, We went into Montauban for the first time this week, having driven past it many times on our way to Cahors, and were favourably impressed.

So you should have lots to do for a week.

<In fact there was a well known radio sketch in the 1970's satirizing the name.> Actually it was a famous TV program on Antenne2 "le Petit Rapporteur"
For those who can understand French there is a video which mixes the old sketch and an update on France2, the new name of Antenne2.
If you pay attention, you'll hear the mayor pronouncing the q at the end of Montcuq.
Even if you don't understand you'll see some nice views of Montcuq ;-)

Merci mille fois Coco - I had never seen it, and laughed many times out loud! I know that in Occitan all the letters are pronounced, including the last one, but it's not half as funny!

My pleasure Carlux, you are very proficient in French, it is not that easy to understand!

Carlux & Coco,
Thankyou for your response, sorry for the incorrect spelling - a senior moment!!

My French is not that good but I did enjoy the shots of Montcuq in the video. We are not city people and are looking for a town with some shops, cafes etc, and within easy reach of other interesting places to visit so sounds as though Montcuq could fit the bill.

Again many thanks.

Thanks Coco.

That is the property we are hoping to stay in, it certainly sounds very good on the owners website and walking distance into the town. Our plans seem to be falling into place very nicely.

Have I missed something in this link? Are there really no pictures of the house itself?

Patricia Jun 4th, 2008 03:26 PM

Carlux,

The owners website www.spotinfrance.com shows interior pictures of the house, I've also seen other pictures on another site but I can't quite remember which one.
