Montpellier to carcassonne

Has anyone driven from Montpellier to Carcassonne who has suggestions of a place to stop for lunch or sites to see on the route?

How many hours/days do you have available to do this trip???

It depends which route you take : via the coast and Beziers or via Clermont l'Herault and Olonzac. Both are scenic.
The highway isn't.

That's less than a 2 hour drive by highway, so you could spend at least half a day somewhere. I really liked Narbonne myself, and it is on the way.

Fontfroide, lovey Cistercian abbey just outside of Narbonne. We loved it but saw it in the spring, when the roses were all out

All fine suggestions. Here's mine. Take the A9 autoroute to the A61 heading west of Narbonne. Get off at exit 25 and take the D611 to the D212 to Lagrasse (13km). Lovely medieval village to stroll around and have lunch and maybe visit the old abbey. Pick up the scenic country road D3 heading west out of Lagrasse and it will bring you almost all the way to Carcassonne.

If you take the coastal route, you might enjoy looking around Sète. We spent an hour or so there walking through the city along the canal.

Here's a link to Kerouac's photo report on Sète:

A few years ago, we spent a week in a gîte near Pézenas and liked that town too.

And in Béziers, we spent some time watching boats on the Canal du Midi passing through a series of seven locks:

We had a good lunch in a little restaurant by the canal, Les Comédiens, that still has OK reviews on Trip Advisor:
