Montmartre Cemetery
 

Does this cemetery give or sell a detailed map, like Pere Lachaise does..? I found one on paris.fr, but it doesn't seem very detailed.

Hi - At the gate to the cemetary there are usually maps available and , i think, some people selling some. We took one of the 2 hr. Paris Walks tour of the cemetary and truly enjoyed it and would highly recommend doing it that way. Very inexpensive and no reservations needed.

I saw this as one of the highlight of Paris....You see,I am a great cat lover,and there was a lot of cats there,in bizarre places,such as on top of tombs.....I wished I'd taken my camera to Paris for this....There is a monument to Dalida,who had a very tragic life....I could not claim to have heard of her before my visit here....

We went in there last year but didn't stay long and didn't stop at a window to see about a map... but I'd like to return and spend more time. I enjoyed the kitties, too.

If you can understand French, there is this well-nown French tour guide who specializes in tours of the various cemeteries. I took the one ofontmartre with him, and it was pretty interesting. He used to do only Pere Lachaise, but has branched out to Montmartre and I think I've noticed that he now does some other guided tours, also. In any case, his name is Vincent Langlade and you can look for his tours under "Conferences" in Pariscope, l'Officiel des Spectacles, etc.

Even if you didn't understand French much, I suppose it would be as good as going on your own with only a map. I always like to take 1-2 of those Conferences listed in those guides when I am in Paris. YOu can meet some interesting people that way, also.

At the gate of all of the major cemeteries in Paris (Père Lachaise, Montmartre, Montparnasse...), you can get a completely free map from the entrance office. You can buy a more elaborate one from any newsstand near the cemetery. There are also signboards in all of these cemeteries showing the locations of famous tombs.

I found some very good walking tour information of that general area on the jack-travel.com website, you might want to check that out. This is the section on the cemetery which shows the tomb of Dalida (whom I had heard of, but never thought that much of her myself).

He cites a book by Vincent de Langlade in his references, so I guess he has some publications, also, about walks and the cemeteries.

Dalida is the star of Montmartre. She was Miss Egypt in 1956 or something, and her Italian family left Alexandria like all of the other European families did at the Suez crisis. She was one of the top stars in France for... oh, hell. www.dalida.com will amaze you if you have never heard of her. She committed suicide, of course, as all such people do.

cariac, I saw the same thing at Pere Lachaise, I was told the locals feed the cats at night.
Dalida as Kerouac said was a huge star and I think at the same time when Halliday reachd his young peak.
