Not disagreeing with Montmartre as a location, but I will contrast two locations I stayed at on previous trips.

one was in 16th, near Metro Mirabeau. Easy walk to M from hotel, nice cafe near M for breakfast. Some good restos in area, no tourists at all. For sightseeing, only choice was 2 block walk to Seine to see eiffel in distance. To get to Marais, for example, was about 20 min ride, longer back. So everyday I would metro central, do a lot of walking. Before dinner, I would go back to 16th, drop off camera, any purchases and just rest. Then metro back in to eat in 4-7th.

second home base was across from RER St Michel. Out of my window I could see sunrising over Notre Dame. From that location I was 'at' a lot of sights, plenty of restaurants, shops, Seine, etc

I agree wholeheartedly that public transit is great, and Montmartre is not a bad location. But there are some small advantages, on a first trip, to staying a bit more central.

Bonne Annee a tous!

Et à vous de même, Michel! Heureusement, tout le monde n'aime pas les mêmes chose.

"les mêmes choses."

Resolution for me: Learn to proofread!

Merci Beaucoup everyone for your thoughtful replies. After a lot of research, I have booked a room in Beauborg (near the Pompidou). I think it will be better, as many of you point out, being my first trip to Paris. I can walk to the River Seine, Notre Dame and Louvre from there. Will definiately make a trip to Montmarte also. Am getting excited!!

Too bad! People are often warned away from where they should have stayed in the first place.
